A Good article about the importance of winning within the division..........

Pretty common sense stuff about winning your division, but nicely pointed out that the Dolphins have been unable to do this. We should not be getting swept by the Bills like last year. I will actually be disappointed with less than 4-2 in the division this year, and I'm hoping we can go 5-1. I would hope that the Dolphins don't walk into any game this year thinking it's going to be a "gimme". You have to work hard for wins in the NFL. Yes, even against the Bills.

The problem for us is the Bills are in a similar situation to us, but just a year behind. They are turning it around and could be a hell of a good team depending on the QB, and I think Manuel could easily turn out to be a good one.

Under Philbin's leadership, the Dolphins are an atrocious 4-8 in the division. Since you are quite adept at excusing Philbin of every issue with this team in his 2 years in charge, what is your explanation for this wretched division record?

Tannehill threw two of those games away with stupid game management decisions but its still not good enough. 9-7 at home is not good enough. 8-8 season is not good enough. Not making the playoffs is not good enough. Not winning Super Bowls is not good enough. There were dozens of coaches that weren't good enough over the past 2 seasons but I would still be fine with many of them going forward.

Happy?

P.S. I thought you were done posting till the season starts?

Simple Philbin can't coach. One hell of a guy but not a good coach. If you can't beat your division opponent, you can't beat anybody, period!

You're not alone in that magical thinking. There's a lot of people, very reasonable people, who feel if not for one play here or there, or one player who didn't get hurt, that we would have a better record. But it works both ways. There were games we barely manage to win, what if 1 play didn't happen in our favor in those games? And how do you assume that if we have one more great play, that the opposing team doesn't come up with an answer to it, because the game is on the line?

I'm talking about week 3 in 2012 vs the Jets, it was OT we were already in field goal range for the win though it was long like 53 yards if I remember correctly. Tannehill audibled out of the run Sherman called to throw a bomb to Hartline down the sideline. Sure an extra 3 or 4 yards won't guarantee Carpenter will make the kick but how in the hell does that audible make any sense?

Audible against Buffalo, if he makes a play we win the game. But he doesn't even have to make a play, all he has to do is not let their defense make a play. What happens? He lets a Buffalo defender take the ball out of his hand. DISASTER.

In both cases he tried to be the hero but turned out to be the goat.

If the pass was caught it wouldn't have been a bad play. Sherman gives him a run and a pass play every snap and he makes a decision which to run.

So let me get this straight: you are in field goal range in OT, which means you effectively have the game won, and you think its a good idea to pass? Not just pass but throw a 30 yard bomb down the field? Not just that but he threw it to a covered receiver who wasn't even looking for the ball, probably because he couldn't believe Tannehill was actually dumb enough to throw it...

If we we didn't use the 'Go' - "No go" cadence, we would have won both those games. The Bills and Jets teed off on our pathetic oline. When that happens to much, bad plays will eventually result.
That is my theory.

And Philbin had absolutely no input on that? I recall Philbin being asked about that MULTIPLE times during the season and each time he said it wasn't an issue. So how does Philbin get a pass for that if you believe that was one of the main reasons we lost our division games?

What about all the wins against some good teams despite a pathetic oline?
You would rather have another HC, that much is clear, but who could have done more with the lack of talent that Ireland provided? No prominent coach wanted to come here.
The root cause and explanation is the owner and his unwillingness to get rid of Ireland when Sparano was fired.
What is Philbins record against the Patriots?

Why do you think it was a problem?

Why do you think it was a problem?

LANGER said it was a problem but also doesn't seem to fault Philbin for it at all. So I just want to understand his thought process when it comes to this discrepancy.

With the way you all are excusing Philbin of any and all blame for any failures, you would think a monkey could do just as well coaching this team since apparently nothing the coach does has any impact on the results on the field. It's always someone else's fault.

There are many coaches that would have done much better with the assembled talent in my opinion.

Philbin's record against the Patriots is a stellar 1-3.
