As the NFL continues to grapple with its ever-growing concussion problem, some have proposed a rather drastic solution: If you want to protect the safety of players’ heads, take away their helmets.

But would the country’s most powerful sports entity ever consider such a move? According to Dr. John York, the chairman of the NFL’s health and safety advisory commission, it’s a very real possibility.

I know this isn't Dolphins related but it does affect the team in the future if he is right

that's what the NFL will look like

I could see it. Removing the helmet really does reduce the amount of "bone-jarring" hits. Guys are much less likely to launch themselves at other guys without all that padding and protective gear on. However, it will likely lead to some pretty nasty cuts.

The future:

Well goodbye viewers. I wouldn't watch a league like that. What makes football is the badass hitting in addition to the strategy. No helmets take half the game away

What if they just went back to leather helmets? They could still look bad-ass.

Helmets were never intended to be used as weapons, they are safety devices. You don't go smashing your car into things because you have a seat belt on, the seat belt is a safety device of last resort. I think helmets should have like crumple zones, and if your helmet gets crumpled you're out of the game. Its not going to prevent all concussions, and some players will have to sit out due to some bizarre circumstances sometimes. But I think with this type of helmet you'll get less of players using helmets as a battering ram and more fundamentally sound tackling.

Apparently you've never seen a rugby match.

The helmet might be one of the biggest differences

Had a feeling this might gain some traction. I am all for it. Much better than putting a flag on the QB or doing away with kick offs. The transition would be very rough though. These guys have had helmets on all their playing lives. To all the sudden not have that protection, muscle memory would cause some gruesome collisions imo. Won't happen for a while still but if they want to do it they should start with kids and have them grow up w.o the helmets. Of course getting parents on board with that would be a nightmare but a helmet less league, as crazy as it sounds, would in the end be a safer one.

Makes perfect sense to me. The helmets are pretty much weapons. See how many safeties lead with the crown of their skull without a helmet. They would learn fast not to if they still did.

yea because rugby players don't get concussions :lol:

not gonna happen, at least not IMO
