I think most fans would agree that the 6 game win streak to end the season last year, combined with many other factors such as chris chambers emergence as a top 10 wide reciever, ronnie brown showing glimpses of why he was the second pick in the 05 draft left us all feeling pretty damn good about our team last seaon...The feeling was not exclusive to fans, im sure some remember Ron Jaworski's comments the Monday after the Super Bowl last year when he warned the rest of the league to watch out for our Dolphins as an up and coming team. Then comes the Culpepper trade, adding to that feeling of excitement. The consensus was that if we could win 9 games with an Average Gus Frerotte at the helm there was no limit to what we could do with the physically gifted ( a statement i am glad to debate anyone on) Daunte Culpepper.
Now comes week 4, and a game against the lowly Texans. Im sure many of us thought by now we would be 3-0 near the top of most so called "Experts" power rankings and well on our way to a fast start. Well, this quite obviously isnt the case...but its also not the case that our season is a wash and we should bench our future for a QB who has looked nothing more than average throughout his career.
Lets slow down and think about this for a second...if we beat the texans, we improve to 2-2. For those of you who have looked at the schedule this week im sure you'd agree that the rest of our division may very well be in for a rough weekend, and it is conceivable that all might lose...leaving the jets, phins, and pats all at 2-2 with us traveling to New England next weekend and New York the in week six.
So for everyone who has been impatient with our slowly developing offense, or completely ignored our improving defense...I ask you to consider being optomistic if things start to look a little better on Sunday, we might end the weekend with an opportunity to go into New England in week 5 and take sole posession of first place, maybe even soldify it in week 6 against the Jets. What more could we ask for than to be in first place in our division in week 6...being hyped throughout the year as this seasons super bowl sleeper would have been nice but also could have presented challenges. Although its not what we all had in mind lets see how things play out these next few weeks before we bench Culpepper for Harrington and fire Saban to bring in Larry Coker.
