Listening to Clayton on ESPN, a thought popped into my head. Could part of our problem be a false sense of overconfidence? Yeah we finished off the season strong last year, but other than that what has this group accomplished?
Granted there are other issues...
1.Offensive playcalling (Ronnie runs the ball only 14 times?!?)
2.The only WR that seems to catch anything is Welker
3.Shelton struggling at LT
4.Revolving door at RG.
5.Lack of pressure on the QB from the D-Line
6.No Pressure from Blitzes
7.Zach and Tillman not being able to cover TEs.
8.Daniels trying to come in and start after missing most of TC, all of preseason, and the first two weeks of the season.
9.The lack of McMike in the passing game.
10.Daunte's struggles
The only guys who have held up their end of the bargain are Traylor,Holliday,W Allen, and Crowder. (Ronnie to whenever we decide to use him).
Now I'm not going to say the sky is falling, and that we are the worst team in the league, ect. But I do think our group right now is a bunch of underachievers. Outside of the o-line (which I admit has holes), there is no excuse to some of the poor play.
There is no reason McMike should not be included in the passing game. There is no reason CC doesn't get thrown to until the 2nd quarter. There is no reason Ronnie shouldn't run 14 times in a quarter, let alone an entire game.
I have defended Mularkey since we hired him, but the offense has regressed inpart because of his playcalling. Saban needs to make a change. Whether it is moving our OC to the sidelines (much like he did with Linehan last year), or getting a new OC next year we need a change.
Which brings me to the defense. How is it the team that was second in the league in sacks a year ago can't get pressure on the QB this year, even on blitzes? I'm not counting the Houston game since David Carr has been sacked atleast 70 times atleast twice in his career.
Some people complain about our secondary, but we can't consistently put the corners one on one, with no safety help, and expect them to stop guys when we can't get to the QB.
The playoffs are still a possibility, but we need a drastic change in the gameplan. We can not rely on reverses or trick plays, we can not continuously do 5 yard passes, and we can not continue to leave our CBs in a bad spot.
One way to solve this is to give the young guys a chance. When we've gotten into the red zone we've struggled. Why not use Hagan who is 6'4? Tillman is struggling at safety, why not play our first round pick, who happens to be a safety?
Even though Daunte played better this week, I think we need to bench him. Send a message to the team, let Joey have a change (who IMO looked better with the first team offense in preseason than Daunte did).
All I'm asking for is do something different to show that you're trying to win. Don't keep going with the same gameplan
