I must be Finheaven’s worst lurker going. I read every post on the site every day but rarely post. I just thought I’d lay out my thoughts. It’s long and it’s not like I’m CK or Boomer so beware..
QB
Pennington was amazing last year. His lack of arm strength remains a legitimate concern. I don’t think he will last another season playing 16 games so…
Henne will have to step in at some stage next season. He can’t be judged on one drive against Arizona but if the trifecta thinks he is the man I am happy with that, which means…
Beck for a 4th round pick in this draft would be ideal. The lad has been given a raw deal but them’s the breaks.
RB
Ronnie has yet to fulfil his potential but has yet to run behind a decent OL which I think he now has. I don’t think he will or should be extended until he shows what he can do from our base set next season and…
Ricky is a serviceable back up for next season but not beyond but I do like what…
Cobbs brings to the party in the wildcat and screens and he is a very good option as the 3rd back
FB
Lou did very well on short yardage and caught a few balls out of the backfield but nothing to get too excited about
WR
Ginn infuriates me. He improved last year and I would never judge a WR until their third year. My concern is his toughness and I don’t just mean his stepping out of bounds. Several times last year he could have taken a high pass without jumping, allowing him to acquire a much greater YAC but each time he leapt as high as he could, in a kind of fetal position in the air as if the entire 85 bears defense was just behind about to tear him to shreds! This when there was no-one near him. I still live in hope that he grows a pair, soon.
Camarillo/Bess are basically the same. Small, but tough and with great hands. Two very good slot Wrs.
London has done nothing yet to suggest he can become a true starter
Wilford…if Dallas can take a cap hit on TO then……
TE
Martin was a revelation given how poor he was the previous year. Great hands, routes.
Fasano started much better than he finished but that may have more to do with not being thrown to as much.
LT
Long was excellent for a rookie. No depth though.
LG
Smiley was good but injured, again. This guy needs to put in a 16 game season. So does Grove.
C
Satele was driven back so badly by NT’s that it was obvious he had to be replaced. He single handedly ruined our running games in some games.
RG
Thomas had little chance in the regular season but by all accounts we have found a gem in the rough. Again, he needs to stay healthy.
RT
Carey did not impress me as much as he did the trifecta to deserve becoming the highest paid RT in the NFL. Far from it actually. He whiffed a lot early on. Improved a bit though as the season went on.
ROLB
Joey was brilliant. Pushing on a bit though. Moses should be cut. Wake should spell Peezy as the WOLB
LOLB
Roth sets the edge well. Minor pass rush threat. 1st pick here.
Anderson is not that bad. Would keep him for depth and ST.
Torbor costs too much. Cut him.
ILB
Crowder is no better than a No. 2 but is being paid as a No. 1 so we’re stuck with him. Still young. Maybe they can coach him up to actually read a play in advance. Bart Scott forced the FO’s hand here.
Ayodele is OK.
CB
Will Allen is a fine No. 2 NFL cornerback. I have great time for this lad
Nate Jones was good on blitzes. Can’t say I noticed him much otherwise
S
Bell was excellent. Great reader of plays. Savage hitter. Could do with the odd interception though
Wilson IMHO will be a great signing. Hope he can quarterback the D like Hill cos CC won’t do it
P/K
Last year for Fields to be consistent. Drove me mad last year. Carpenter looks good so far.
Free Agency
I have to admit I have been scouring the internet for any rumour/news of new signings and was delighted with Wilson and thought the floodgates would open. Alas, no. Grove, again if he can stay healthy, should be an upgrade over Samson. I think they wanted Bart Scott but quickly realised this wouldn’t happen and resigned CC. With regard the CB situation, I think they looked at the number of FA’s and decided to wait to see who was left after the big money was doled out. They’re still waiting for the market to bottom out. Although I would like to have seen a bigger splash, I think prudence is probably the best approach in the present market. I would like Bodden though.
Draft
1 Either Larry English or Everette Brown. If not, try and trade down for early second and third
2 Ron Brace
2B Darius Butler or Sean Smith
3 Brian Robiskie or Ramses Barden
I would prefer to trade out of the first pick for a high enough second and a third and get an Ayers or a Nicks with the first pick and have an extra third but that is Madden stuff. I am more concerned with the fact that I go to bed every night and lie there thinking about who we should draft!! I have never had so many players I would like to pick. Most are in the second round oddly enough.
Overall
I think the FO didn’t expect to do as well last year and now are betwixt and between as to whether we are in a rebuilding mode or win now mode. The calls for Hakeem Nicks to be drafted make great sense. I think this kid will be good but like all Wrs needs time. It would take Ron Brace two years to learn the 34 NT. It will be hard to find a CB who can start right away. So do you draft for the present or the future. Hopefully, the future. We need a SOLB who can rush the passer. Larry English is the only(IMO) guaranteed starter from my initial mock at pick 25. But if we could get three of Nicks, Brace, Butler, Ayers, Smith with our first three I would sleep easy for the summer!
Thanks for reading

Nice post; however, I'm not sure why everyone loves Donald Thomas honestly he hasn't even played a complete professional game for such high accolades.

It seems we are still in rebuilding mode. Which I accept. I don't think we are quite ready to make a push by picking up FA's. Maybe we'll get another 10 game improvement next season....that would be 21 wins. Guess we would have to include preseason. Good post.

I will never understand the complaints on T.Ginn when he has improved each year. I understand alot of WR's come into their own in year three but is this law or something. If he takes until his 4th or 5th year does that really matter as long as he keeps getting better each year then we're doing well by him. He also has had 3 different QB's his rookie year and then a 4th QB in his 2nd year.

Crowder is a good football player and his contract is exactly what a good LB gets in this market.

The FO expects to win every game and will not deviate from their system of building a team. Their building to sustain long term success and if they win a Superbowl in the short term it's a bonus then. Once they have the core pieces that are performing at a high level then we may pay a hyped skill player in an offseason splash move but until them it's a matter of trenches and hard working team members.

No player drafted is for now, their all for the future. Over hyped and over priced FA are for now, being smart enough to only pay the young ones covers both now and the future.

I feel the same way every year about the draft, I always wish we had 10 2nd round picks!!!!!!

No he played the whole game in the first one, he didn't realized his foot was as bad, and he had a good first game, bad foot and all. What I'm concerned about is he miss the chance for experience

I agree with you regarding Ginn. Players in certain positions normally need more time than other. The consensus for WRs is three years and Teddy should be given at least that much before passing judgment. I am only concerned with his toughness and I hope to God he comes out with a Steve Smith-like attitude to his play this year. This kid can be special.
Maybe I am wrong about CC's contract. But I thinkk it was a bit high in relation to the number of big plays he produced.
The FO philosophy you talk about is exactly the one I hope they maintain for years to come and I hope they continue to sing FAs in their twenties and build a consistency like Pittsburgh manage to do year in, year out.
All players are drafted for the future, but some are drafted for now too e.g. Jake Long, Matt Ryan. Aaron Curry will play the majority of snaps next year regardless who drafts him, as will many others. Obviously you can only make your best judgment call and some will be mistakes e.g. Ghoulston:lol:

I haven't developed a man crush on him yet. As with you, I haven't seen enough of him to know if he's any good or not either. I suppose I'm going on what others have said. Some pundit actually had him in his rookie team of the year!:err:. Gil Brandt I think. But from all accounts he's the prototypical RG so here's hoping.

How come you want Brown as our first pick? I'm a Noles fan (clearly) and I like the kid but not with that pick and with our needs it doesnt seem like the right pick at all.

Donald Thomas, for where he was drafted, earned a starting spot on opening day. That should say something. He played his first NFL game, injured, and still held his own. That's toughness. I'm not tooting his horn, but you can kind of see where the praise is coming from. I'm sure if it were up to him, he would have started and played the entire season.

'not with that pick' suggests that it would be a reach to select him at #25 when most mocks I've seen have going earlier. with regard to our needs, I think a pass rushing OLB is one of our biggest needs, if not the biggest. We depended completely on Joey for a pass rush last year, exposing a weak secondary, in some cases to an embarrassing degree. If we are starting a rookie CB next season, which is looking all the more likely, I think increasing our pass rush level is crucial in protecting that secondary. Iwould prefer Orakpo. I heard Mayock call him the closest thing to Ware in the draft but we are picking too low to get him. I would prefer Larry English over Brown. If all three are gone I would trade down. The CBs that will be remaining at that spot are short and I don't think BP will draft a short CB. I think he waits until the second for a Butler or Smith. It wouldn't kill me to see Nicks selected but I just don't think that will happen.

spanish jonny, what happened to the D-line in your analysis?

Nice post.

I'm just happy that we are competitive again. The Pats game, Jets games, Falcons game...its going to be fun next year big time.

I'm excited about our young d-line, Ginn, a healthy o-line, new dbs, and finally a coach with balls and an open mind.

One more point, Penny was great last year but I think he showed his true self in the Ravens game. I'm ready to rock with Henne. Also, if Ronnie can't run it up the gut this year I don't know what else we can do to get him going.

Ironic how Cadillacs career has gone, I guess we chose the better back eh? - remember that argument?

Wish you would post more. We could use your common sense around here.
Nice analysis. Just to wonder, why no D-line analysis?

Well, if you don't post often, at least you are doing quality over quantity. I agree with most everything you said.

I think Crowder is a good starting LB, maybe slightly overpaid, but that's the current market and circumstances.

I wonder about Ginn's toughness as well, but like you said, give him a little more time to get comfortable. He has improved consistently under different systems. I'm one of those guys that wanted Quinn at 9, but I can't say Ginn has been a disappointment so far, although I wish he would return more kicks.

I would love to get Bodden, and I think we will sign a veteran CB before the draft, and hopefully draft a CB one day one for the future.

I thought Carey did well, but expectations were a little higher because he was a beast the year before. He is worth the big payday because of his versatility and the fact that we now have a strong line that is coming together for once.

Nice post!
