Anybody notice on a PA fake towards the end of the game one of our D-linemen totally laid out the fullback and got after the QB? I rewound it like 3 or 4 times and noticed it was Roth. That shows his strength. Once he learns technique he may be a player for us after all.

the guy will be a great player. Its just flat out silly to say he won't this early.

I think he'll be a great DE in the 3-4, similar to Aaron Smith in Steeler country.

I think Roth needs to LOSE weight, they had him bulk up since signing and I think it makes him play to pudgy and robotic. He needs to be back the the frame he had as a senior at Iowa. His main downfall is technique, not speed or strength. JT pulls it off at 250lbs (realistically, he aint 260+). He needs to learn from JT, Bowens, and Carter.

 he ain't even 250. but yeah they kind of told roth that hes going to be needed in run support, which i can understand. as a 3-4 DE you need to be bigger, its that simple. But its not how he's used to playing.

I honestly haven't seen him do anything yet this year...I haven't seen every game, have to go to a bar, but I really haven't seen him make a tackle. I hope he does well next year.

Well he's literally buried underneath a bunch of players on the depth chart.

That's one of the problems with this site. People judge players after one game or one year having little grasp of how long it takes to develop quality players. I don't know if he's going to be great but at this point my grade on Roth is incomplete. I would like to see more of him if Saban feels he's ready to contribute. The one guiy that stood out with me yesterday was Holliday who I thought had a real positive game

Call me crazy, but please dont flame me.

Why dont we experiment with Roth as an OLB in pass rush situations?

Especially if he leans himself back to Iowa form.

One downfall, opposition will know hes rushing if thats all we use him for.

Im all for trying to convert him into a LB though. Thoughts?????

Its just ridiculous to say a guy isn't NFL material in his rookie year. I mean look at drew brees. I don't think any of us saw anything in him until his 4th year in the NFL. Look at ELi manning right now. then you point out that matt roth plays defense, and it becomes even harder to tell if he's getting better, because we can't really look at stats to judge him.

Roth cant rush the passer. when the OLineman gets his hands on Roth, its over for him, his arms are to short and hes not strong enough to get off the block. hes not that quick either.

he buried Lamont Jordan that one play though.

i dont know where Roth fits in our future. i honestly dont think he shed blockers well enough or gets enough push to be a 3-4 DE.

Ther are just far too many Chicken Littles on here that like to run off at the keyboard. I mean if every player doesnt play like a Pro Bowler every game they start "What can we get for X?" or the "X is a bust". How stupid do all the people that called Ronnie a bust feel, and RB is the easiest position to contribute right away. DE's particularly ones that are asked to bulk up and learn to play a very complex hybrid system arent going to contribute right away. Then you couple that with the fact that he is playing behind alot of guys that are pretty good and have veteran knowledge, we should have expected not to see him. But as I said there are far too many Chicken Littles around here.

Roth may very well end up being a run stuffing DE. I know everyone wants an all star, but look at the patriots. Guys like Willy McGinest, glecko, ted johnson. they were staples for their defense, but they weren't household names. That may end up being what roth becomes.

Yeah, I watched that play a few times over too. He laid that FB out, and kept going after the QB. You noticed Collins hurried that pass too becasue he saw how Roth blasted his FB, Collins wanted nothing of that  . I see that play as a little taste of what we will see from Roth in the future when he's ready to take over the strong side DE spot.

comparing a rookie QB to a rookie DE is a horrible comparision.

and you shouldnt look at stats to judge a player anyways. Roth has shown pretty much zero glimpses of being really good. even when rookies are doing bad, you can tell for the most part they got glimpses of greatness. Roth hasnt did anything to impress me as of now. because hes a 2nd round rookie, people arent aloud to say hes unimpressive?
