Aside from the frustration of a terrible loss against the Pats, I can't explain what an immeasurable sadness I feel for Cam Wake. For the past six and a half seasons, the guy gave this team his all. He has always been a consummate professional and unnecessarily loyal to our franchise, even making his last contract team-friendly. And he has given Dolfans some of our favorite memories over the past half-decade - who will forget the walk-off sack against the Bengals on Halloween?
It's not just his sheer talent and abilities that made me a huge fan, but rather the person and his story. His journey in of itself is inspirational, almost unbelievable. You know, I long passed the age where I looked "up" to professional athletes. Except for Cam. I'm the same age as him. I probably have a more "important" job. But I actually still look up to that guy. I've learned things from him, as cliche as those lessons may be.
He truly deserved to be on better teams - it is simply sinister that the man did not even get a taste of the playoffs.
I don't think his playing days are over, but his career as a Dolphin most likely is. And it's hard to say if he'll ever have the same burst if/when he does come back next season. That look he had when he was on the ground - he knew it was over. He was taking in the stadium, the environment, possibly one last time. He always talked about never taking football for granted, and even in the moment of what must have been tremendous pain and frustration, he clearly appreciated it.
So here's to you Cam. Thanks for being one of the few bright spots, if not the brightest, for us since you got here. I'm crushed that it ended this way. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
