A personal statement on the Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito situation

It always amazes me, when people on message boards want to complain about how bad others are behaving....they always write up something that includes personal insults. It's baffling, really.
IMO when you're saying anything that revolves around what other members of the board are doing or not doing, you've immediately gone off-topic and off-limits IMO.

What's more, we have the Miami Dolphins to talk about here, which is so much more interesting than what a bunch of nobodies are doing on a message board! :)

It's officially out of control. Fox Philly just spent 5 minutes talking about the dolphins and this fiasco

I'm so sick of the way people throw the term "bullying" around these days. It is nothing more than politically correct people trying to deny other people's right to free speech. We are talking about adult men here, not two kindergarten kids arguing on the playground. If Martin had issues with other players on the team, he should have either stood up for himself and handled it himself or he should have went to the coaches and gm and had it out with all of them. What was going on, if anything serious was going on at all, would be considered harassment not bullying. Everything these days is considered "bullying" and it is just a way to keep anyone from ever hearing something they find offensive.

That's just it, though: "harassment" and "bullying" are closely related and often interchangeable. It's one person imposing their will on someone else without the other's permission. It's one thing to do it on the field, where you're supposed to impose your will and make the play. It's another thing when you're in the locker room, essentially your second home, and you're being harassed. "Bullying" is media shorthand for "harassment" because more often than not, when the media uses the term "harassment," the first thing that pops into the public's mind is "sexual harassment." I work in PR. I deal with buzzwords all day long (you think any rational human being came up with "edutainment" or "synergy"?)

At least now we will see what the reserve offensive linemen can do, and if this leads to a complete and total overhaul of the line in the off-season, the so be it. I mean, between Martin, Icognito, Clabo and Pouncey, who will be back next year? At this point, maybe only Jerry.

Michael

Don't worry about that - Martin will never be playing in the NFL again. To jeopardize the team's interest over your own, for whatever reason, will never sit well in a locker room.

I would not be shocked if he was back this week. The Fins are following this legally and if Martin sees Incognito gone, the snake could be back with the team.

Clabo > Martin.

I think harassment is the best term for what is going on (though I agree that harassment and bullying are not mutually exclusive) and from report is sounds like Incognito went beyond what is seen a simple rookie hazing. Messing with a player (hair cutting/dying, having them carry your helmet/equipment) having them pick up the dinner tab is something that happens with every NFL team. Richie went much further then that....he continued to make being on the team uncomfortable, ostracized him, and made threats not only in the facility (the "you better pick it up or I'm a beat your ass), but took it upon himself to send these types of messages to his phone. Regardless of how Martin handled the situation and walking out on your team in the manner he did was not the way he should have handled the that, Incognito is completely in the wrong in all of this. Its sad to see, but it looks like both players have had their NFL careers severely damaged by all of this.

That's my initial thought too. Cogs is an ass, I think that widely known. My feeling is he tried to make everyday a nightmare for Martin via harassment. Hazing rookies is one thing but I believe cogs made it his personal mission to go after Martin whenever he could where it got to the point that Martin absolutely dreaded going to work everyday. Not everyone has what it takes to stand up to a bully, especially one that doesn't seem to be all there mentally. Even if Martin handled the situation poorly, cogs is the one at fault. Ive been in work environments where someone was singled out and every day coming to work was a living hell for them due to harassment.

Here is my problem with the whole mental illness situation. The tem is thrown around so much now, I do not know what to believe. People use it as a crutch for what ever problems they get them selves into. Same thing with the racial complaints. What it does it creates a problem when there really is a mental illness involved, or a racially motivated problem. You can blame all the fakes out there, who are looking for nothing but excuse for the situations they are in, for making people not believe anybody these days. This team is dysfunctional, and it needs to be cleaned out from the top on down. Things like this cannot go on while you are in command. It shows a pure lack of leadership and control. Ireland, Phillibin, and his coaching staff, are not nearly good enough, to even consider keeping around with all the other garbage that is going on. It's an embarrassment.

Don't care if Martin is gay. Not an issue for me. And I can't care less about rookie hazing. Another non-issue for me.

But, both should go.

If Cogs went too far by gay bashing or race slurring, he needs to be gone for creating a hostile work place.

Martin may have mental issues, I don't know. He may just be a big wuss ... it doesn't matter. He's done in that locker room, because mentally ill or not, no body trusts a rat.

Martin has handled this situation terribly but if the allegations against Incognito are true (and I tend to believe they are), the team was right to suspend him and he has played his last down in a Dolphins uniform -- probably any NFL uniform.

My god the amount of ignorance in this thread is unbelievable.

Speculating that Martin might be gay because there is no way a straight, 300+ pound man could possibly be bullied might top the list.

Being gay doesn't make you any less of a man and it doesn't make you any more sensitive. Being gay is your sexual orientation, not your personality. I honestly can't believe this still has to be explained to grown men.

It's also pretty clear that many people in this thread still have a 1950's viewpoint on mental illness. Mental illness can't just be turned on and off like a light switch. It is a chemical imbalance that is literally out of a persons control. Saying they should "man up" would be like telling a guy with a broken leg to fix the break by thinking about it really hard. It's illogical and ignorant.

so the flamboyent gays...its not their personality?

I don't care if he is gay I just don't think a grown black man on a ream made up mostly of black men is gonna take offense to the n word. of it was the n word and martin told some of the other black players wouldn't they be mad as well?

I agree I think he's gay as well

I don't know if he is gay, but he is definitely lame, and a coward. This is coming from someone who was bullied and beat up all thru high school, to the point that my parents made me leave for college early. If the man is being bullied, stand up for yourself, or tell someone who will do it for you. Don't sit there and take it, or even worse help they bully other people.
