A personal statement on the Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito situation

Schefter should report that Jon Martin is gay and is suffering extreme bleeding from the anus...Incog's father appears to be responsible for the impaling.

Most people here do not know me well enough to know what I stand for and what I'm about. With that being said, I have been pretty disgusted and baffled at the lack of respect and lack of class that some folks have had for an obviously sensitive situation. I am not involved in the situation at all, and though I, like many, lack the facts to truly make a determination at this point, the following is what I know to be true:

  • Mental illness is nothing to joke about or point a finger and laugh. I have quite a bit of knowledge when it comes to mental illness and the kind of battles people go through when they are dealing with a mental illness. In many cases, it is not the person's fault what they are dealing with, but rather, a chemical malfunctioning of the brain that produces unwanted symptoms. There are many illnesses that people gather together and fight for, together, like cancer and MS. Mental illness should be no different, as it effects millions and millions of people in this country and around the world. So, as you can imagine, to say that it pisses me off to see people joking about mental illness is an understatement. Have some respect, or maybe even try to put yourself in somebody else's shoes so you don't come off as an ignorant, selfish bigot.

  • Harassment/bullying is also not a joke. Many of us have been on both sides of this, and both can be a learning experience to say the least. Again, like I said in the previous paragraph, have some tolerance. Is it really too hard to understand the necessity to treat people with respect? Now some people may not like how Martin is handling the situation, but as information is becoming more available, is it really necessary to post threads saying that Martin: "is a *****" "is suicidal" "is a drug addict" "should be cut" "should be more of a man" "should nut up". I forgot that every one of you has a perfect life and have never once felt like a victim of something or perhaps mistakenly handled a situation. My father told me once that wise people know when it's time to shut up. So, I implore many of you, just take your fingers

  • Again, I find this odd that I really need to tell this to a board with many people who are older than I am. Is it really necessary to joke about someone being suicidal? Do you ever draw a line, or is this one of those times where you just spout off a bunch of ignorant nonsense on a topic you know nothing about? Take a step back for a second - perhaps look at yourself in the mirror. Does this make you feel better about yourself? When you look back on the nonsense you said or typed, does it make you proud as a person? Is this conduct that one would find noble or worthwhile? Or is this just several people sitting behind the comfort of a computer screen with their feet up saying to themselves "I wonder how I can further build my wondrous internet empire...?"

So, with all of that being said, if you are sitting there thinking to yourself "I wonder how I can stir **** up or put on an exhibit of my intolerance," just don't. Just shut the computer screen, get up off of your chair, and go do something productive instead of hypocritically pestering on an internet message board.

Intolerance is in the eye of the beholder.

And this post is why I will never donate to this website. Because you have people who have no problem calling others out for their beliefs. And then call those people names, as you do so well in your post whom may disagree with you. This board being a sport message board, goes awry in many ways. But I will agree, instead of getting mad on here, just close the browser and move on.

As for Martin, he is a big *****. Football isn't for the weak, nor is the NFL. And if you are weak, play for NE or the Jests, just gtfo of the Phins locker room. The guy should have went straight to his player rep or manned up with Incognito. Being around Union halls and working occasionally on Union sites, I have dealt with racism and ignorance. The key is to tell the mother****er messing with you to back the **** up and get out of your face. Be a ****ing man and tell the prick you aren't the one. Excuses in today's society make for weak, uneducated and soft people.

This isn't Oprah's stomping grounds....is it?

whether it was a racist or a gay slur it was handled by martin poorly. I really don't care if he is or isn't the only thing I care about is how this guy has hurt this team.

Do you also care the way that Incognito has hurt the team?

Michael

My god the amount of ignorance in this thread is unbelievable.

Speculating that Martin might be gay because there is no way a straight, 300+ pound man could possibly be bullied might top the list.

Being Gay doesn't make you any less of a man and it doesn't make you any more sensitive. Being gay is your sexual orientation, not your personality. I honestly can't believe this still has to be explained to grown men.

Stop being so obtuse. No one insinuated ANY of that of what you just posted. What I DID insinuate is that homosexuality is definitely a scenario that would make a machismo personality like Richie Incognito to incessantly harass, bully, whatever term you want to use, a fellow offensive lineman to the point where he leaves the team.

My post was neither an endorsement nor an indictment of being gay, but simply an educated guess at a diagnosis for this whole bizarre fiasco.

Stop letting your agenda cloud your reading comprehension where you trip over yourself to get to your keyboard fast enough to tell everyone they're homophobic meatheads.

I ow martin a big im sorry. All these details coming out i dont blame him for leaving. I was to hard on him and richie is a dirt bag. He done as a fin. Come back now martin.

Is the OP the same guy comparing a chemical imbalance of a diabetic to a person with true Mental illness? If so I have nothing else left to say in this post.........

Richie "allegedly" hurt the team, as well as Martin.
Why does Martin have to live by Richie's rules?
No one, including Martin, has to put up with a workplace like that.
Rookie's chipping in on a team dinner tab is one thing, putting up with the Richie's "alleged" tormenting is absoultely beyond the line.

If all this is true, I lay zero blame with Martin. The only thing I question is how he handled it internally, if at all.
Again, if Richie wasn't such a loser, Martin would not have to deal with being tormented and how he decided to handle it all.

Some of us may handle this situation, by putting the tormentor through a wall, but that doesn't mean that's how everyone could/should handle this.
Martin may not handle things that way, he may have made a complaint, that went unanswered, so he took this route next.
That's the part I'd like more information on. Either way, glad Martin didn't seriously hurt himself, or others, due to Richie's "alleged" antics.

No, intolerance is the people who have a problem with somebody because of race, gender, a mental illness, etc. You know what, maybe I do have intolerance...for the people who use sexual orientation, race, and that kind of thing as a barometer of a person. (I'm not accusing you, by the way, this is a general statement for some of the posts I've seen)

And no, I don't call people names who disagree with me. If you're referring to the posts in which I call out Dr. Phin, it's simply for the fact that no matter the news, he spins it in a negative way. It's never "Despite this, here's some good things or here's something positive." It's always "This is as bad, see I told you so!" or "Something good...obviously this person has no idea what they're talking about because everything is bad and this team sucks!"

Ironically, a good amount of the stuff I wrote about was detailed in the posts that Incognito's father allegedly wrote (I think the article was on deadspin http://www.ibtimes.com/richie-incog...nheaven-user-idrd1994-accuses-jonathan-martin). For those who missed it, it was calling Martin a suicidal drug use who had attempted suicide multiple times because he is unstable and yada yada yada. That was the thread and the posts that lead me to write this.

There's been a little negativity about Martin still, which in my own opinion, given the recent information, he is fully justified for not feeling comfortable in the team facility. But, that's an opinion.

What I was obviously really perturbed about was seeing these heated accusations about Martin, and then some people going too far into speculation saying it was wrong for somebody to be gay. I wasn't posting this in a way to be self righteous, I was just pretty pissed off at the intolerance of some. And mainly, it was that account that may be Incognito's father that just set it to a boiling point for me.
