A few summers ago one of my best friends invited me up to what he affectionately called his “white-trash cabin” in the Adirondacks. This was not how I described the outing to my family. Two of my Jewish acquaintances once joked that I’d “make a good Jew.” My retort was not, “Yeah, I certainly am good with money.” Gay men sometimes laughingly refer to one another as “******s.” My wife and her friends sometimes, when having a good time, will refer to one another with the word “bitch.” I am certain that should I decide to join in, I would invite the same hard conversation that would greet me, should I ever call my father Billy.

I really suggest you take the time to read this.

Wow, one can make light of ethnic and racial stereotypes, and holy guacamole, use naughty words, and it doesn't necessarily mean you're in the klan, and maybe you don't have to make a public display of penitence. What's more, it may not even be the basis of a law suit.

What is the world coming to?

I read the article but don't agree with the author. I think the word should not be used period. Hey just my opinion on the subject I assume you agree with the authors point of view?

The thing is, if you don't like a particular word or particular types of jokes, that's fine. There's a saying though that we shouldn't make a federal case out of it. Unfortunately, people literally make a federal case out of it all the time, at the cost of millions of dollars.

I, for one, don't use the word. But he does have some interesting points. I wouldn't call my mom or dad by their first name out of respect. I sometimes call my friends names that I wouldn't say to complete strangers.

Point is, it's all on preference. Some women don't like the C word, others don't mind. I don't like the N word at all, but there are others who use it. I call friend's parents Mr./Mrs. Jones, and not by first name. Just habit. I think word usage is a habit that in some cases, can turn into a plague.

Yes I guess I can see the preference point, we are Italian and the older male adults in our family make the usual Italian jokes etc. It's just not in my DNA nor do I want to pass that stuff along to my children by my example.

The article is ok - it makes an obvious point, that the degree to which language is offensive depends on the context in which it is used. Duh.

I have no idea how that sheds any light at all on the Martin-Incognito situation, but that's a few more minutes of my life I'll never get back... :idk:

It's stupid. To continually try to push that it is somehow ok to use the word if you're black is absurd to me. If you don't want it used then you shouldn't use it yourself. The color of the person saying it has no bearing on anything. It's not like Cog would have approached Martin's mother at a gathering and would have referred to her by the N word. That's just nonsense. Perspective needs to start becoming a part of peoples thought process. They BOTH called each other that and it was a completely mutual and accepted part of their communication with each other as men on a football team of other grown men. Martin has been a part of this environment all his football life and this whole thing is the most blown out of proportion ludicrous thing I have ever seen take place in sports media. He walked out and quit on his team, created a complete disaster for his teammates with a total BS made up scenario and then abandoned them.
Incognito has done some dumb things and is certainly been a hothead before but he did absolutely NOTHING wrong in this situation.

post of the day for using the phrase "holy guacamole"

I raised my son in a fairly upscale, very low crime and frankly homogenous area in the rolling hills of Southern California. Unfortunately he embraced rap music wholeheartedly and much to my chagrin, started glorifying the thug world, demeaning women as "beyotches" and bandying about the "N word" though at that point he never knew any African Americans. Essentially, exposure to the music glorifying that lifestyle and repetitive exposure to those terrible words without really understanding what they meant desensitized him to a point where, as a young teen he actually identified with the messages he was inundated with through the "music." Unfortunately, he did some acting out and learned the hard way after some painful bumps in the road that these poseurs and losers he was hero-worshipping who were really false idols with values that didn't reflect who he truly was or how people should be respected. The point is, based on some pop culture and music, despite what he and his friends had going for them, he was so susceptible to anti-social attitudes and hurtful words that he grew conditioned to be numb. Long way of saying: I don't buy that whether the "N" word is used with an "r" or "ah" suffix, it should be acceptable to anyone and that one's color does not give them an automatic justification to use the word because the implications and harm is a lot further-reaching than they could know. :idk:
