Of the league-leading nine FG's he has missed, five have been from outside 50 yards. Inside 50 yards, he is 16-20, which is not far off what should be expected in today's NFL.

I agree and will give him some leeway on those, however, its the chip shots that he keeps missing that pisses me off

I agree with you on that. The one he missed up in NY was (I think) 54 yards? I don't blame the lost on him for that. I still believe he is one of the best in the league, he's just having a down season.
Adam Vinatieri missed two on his return to New England earlier this season. I don't see anybody wanting his head.

BTW, I hate kickers:D

16-20 from under 50 yds. and 2 have been blocked.

Two points:

1. He has had an off-year. Let's not sugarcoat it.
2. I don't believe in unloading somebody for one off year, especially when they've had absolutely unreal years in the past.
3. Fans are such bandwagoneers.

I wonder if Mare would accept the role of only doing kickoffs and letting someone else do FG duty.. His touchbacks are invaluable to this team and redeem his horrible accuracy to some extent.

That's three points:D

The thing about Mare is he is arguably the best kickoff kicker in the NFL. Even though his field goal percentages and distances aren't prolific like they have been, his kickoffs are. I am all for bringing in another kicker to kick field goals. But we need to keep Mare at a reduced price for kickoffs. Unless of course his field goal percentage goes up, then I can justifiably keep him for his current price for full duties.

One he had blocked was on Mare, he kicked it too low and there was no penetration from the oposition. Mare isnt a bad kicker IMO but maybe he needs to take a pay cut. His performances this season isnt going to get him a big contract next season.

Olindo hasn't been an elite kicker for several seasons now, so to say he's having an off-year is giving him too much credit. He is still perhaps the best in the league at kickoffs, but I would really consider below average on field goals at this point. I cant really explain why though. He still has the leg and hits a pretty nice ball. He's just inconsistent. I don't think he's been the same kicker since Blevins was replaced. Olindo was the best in the league while he was coaching him.

i recently read an article in the daily metro newsmagazine that said that if you had to choose between a kicker who was the best at kickoffs and the worst at FGs or a kicker who was the worst at kickoffs and the best at field goals, by far, the olindo mare-like kicker is more valuable to a team winning games. the article referenced some research that i now i wish i hadnt thrown away.

i hadnt thought about it before, but i suppose it does makes sense.

Yea 16-20 under 50 yards including 2 blocked and one missed on a terrible field in New England. I have defended Mare thru this slump . . . and yes he is off this year . . but people are exagerrating it real bad. He has the leg to be great from 50 . . . hell he has proven it in the past . . .this is a SLUMP people, people go thru them and snap out of them. Mare still has the rest of this season to "snap out" of the slump he is in from long range.

U throw in the fact that he is tops in the league in touchbacks . . . and clearly he is more valuable than people saying "cut him immediately" or other nonsense we hear.

Mare was pretty solid last year. his problem isn't his amount of misses, but where they are from.
