Q: With Michael Crabtree's holdout, will the Dolphins consider trading next year's #1 pick, along a combination of two receiver, if he would agree in principle to 5-7 pick type of salary? What are your thoughts? Jorge Alvarez, Miami.

A: I wondered the same thing initially as this Crabtree thing has dragged on. The guy was great in college and sure looks like a star in the making. But this regime has no stomach for "diva receivers," and after this holdout Crabtree definitely is starting to look like one. He also had the foot problem in the spring, so that would give a potential trading partner significant pause as well.

I wouldnt. They would want a 1st and Bess and Ginn. Then what. No thanks. Let him go back to the draft next year and be a 3-5th round pick.

The deadline has already passed when rookies can be traded.

Crabtree cannot be traded under any circumstances.

We could have had Boldin for less....

Why would we give up that much for a question mark when we could get a Pro-bowler for less?

Based on the realities of the salary cap and the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the likelihood of Crabtree heading back into the draft pool will increase dramatically if he doesn't sign before Week 10 of the regular season.
Here's why. After Week 10, he can't play at all this year. If he's not signed in 2009, neither the 49ers nor any team to which his rights might be traded before next year's draft would have extra rookie pool space in 2010 to sign Crabtree to a contract. (Even if there's no salary cap in 2010, there nevertheless will be a rookie pool.) This means a contract would be difficult to negotiate, with Crabtree required to defer much of his guaranteed money to the one-time incentive based on achieving a certain level of playing time.
This would, as a practical matter, push much of his money into 2011, or beyond.
By that point, Crabtree might be more inclined to continue to refuse to work out a deal, and to give it a try again in the draft. Indeed, he'll likely get his money (however much it might be) more quickly by signing a contract as a 2010 draft pick than as a 2009 draft choice signed in 2010 with no rookie pool space.
Thus, regardless of whether Crabtree intends to re-enter the draft, his hand might be forced if he doesn't do a deal by November 12 — more than five months before the date on which he'd re-enter the pool of players who'll be joining the league in 2010.
Crabtree needs to do a deal before November 12. And if he's going to do a deal before that date, he needs to simply do a deal now, in the hopes of making a contribution to the 49ers this year.
The problem, however, is that there's no apparent middle ground, no face-saving option that can be characterized as a win-win, even if, given the lateness of the hour, it's a lose-lose.
The bottom line here is — both the player and the team have lost, so far. The only chance of turning it around will come if/when the player decides to trade delusion for reality and accept a contract based on the slot in which he was drafted.
Though Crabtree might eventually rise from this mess and become a Hall of Famer, most NFL careers don't last a decade, and his biological clock already is thumping. If he doesn't act accordingly in the near future, it might be too late to turn it around next year.
Especially if he hopes to finagle a top-10 contract from his slot in round two.

Its still way too early to say he wont sign. So far he has only held out a week longer than Ronnie Brown did. I guess he and his agent still cannot accept that the draft has nothing to do with how good u may be. They should accept the money and get incentives.

This thread title is quite misleading. "A possible new receiver" title then it links to something that isn't possible.

everything aside, his attitude this, his salary that,
deadlines, shoes size, etc.....

doesnt matter!!!!

exciting, productive, electrifying players on offense
or special teams just seem to carry the plague as
far as the dolphins brass is concerned. and it has
been that way since shula left.

this team goes OUT OF ITS WAY to avoid going after
or drafting or bringing in playmaking, productive players
on offense! brees [2x] boldin, moss, steven jackson,
matt hasslebeck, hakeem nicks, and the many, many others
we had shots at over the years, qb's, rb's, wr's, special teams
return aces in free agency, the draft, trade, etc......

and then they squawk and squawk about lack of points and
production and consistancy. poor field position, etc....

you have to have the players WHO CAN BRING IT!

and we dont. once again, in 2009, we have no electrifying
special teams return guy [unless they finally let ted ginn
do what he was brought in to do] and no BIG TIME, scare
the hell out of secondary's wr [unless brian hartline is actually
something or ginn has that 3rd year break out.

you cant tell all from pre-season, thats true. but you can tell a lot,
and from what i see, pretty much same old dolphins. pedestrian
wr play, broken plays, dropped balls, 1 great play then 3 bad plays.

WAY underachieving run game. [but there ready to give ronnie brown
a huge extension, even before they see how his year is going to pan out]

in spite of the fact that he has been in the leauge 5 years and had only 1
thousand yard season. [yeah, i know, its all the other players fault].

all of the bad habits and short coming this team has had appear to still
be happening. its like ground hog day in miami, no matter who you bring
in!

no. i am not gloom and dooming. we will win some games. we will not be
winning the division this year, and will fight hard for 3rd place. but we just
do not have the personel on offense to compete and stay with the big
boys in the nfl. we cant score enough points. the 17-13 run at at all costs
football mentality just does not work against the quick strike offenses that
are in abundant now in the leauge [and expecially in our division].

untill the finz brass all get over the fear of star players mentality, we just
are NOT going to get where we all want to go.

TEA anyone?

Crabtree is a rookie who was injured before the combine. Couple that with his current additude which indicates he is a premodonia I certainly do not want him on the fins. Your looking at a buy whom is projecting as a guy that will always want more money, possibly injury prone and unproven in the NFL. Let him stew.

He has held out basically one more week than Ronnie Brown did and he is a prima donna lol. How many games did he miss in college?

How stupid are these rooks? Don't they understand you get paid based on where you were drafted not where you think you should have been drafted.

Basically 2 more weeks (as of tomorrow)

I defended Ronnie when people were bitching about him holding out in 05....and defended Crabtree to a point....but I'm having trouble doing it anymore. First floating the idea of re-entering the draft was ridiculous. Wanting to blow up the slotting process because you think you should have been drafted higher....is equally ridiculous.

If Crabtree doesn't sign and enters the draft next year, there's no way he is taking as high by a team...which means that he will be slotted to make less...which means the system that he's complaining about will only hurt him more. I think he signs with San Fran just before the start of the season.
