When I saw him last night I think I got it - and while I understand many of us are outraged at him - if you are a curious person about this whole thing this may help.

He may be a Schizoid Personality Disorder - http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/schizoid-personality-disorder/DS00865
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizoid_personality_disorder

I posted above a Mayo Clinic and Wikipedia description - a loner - isolative - non- emotional - non-expressive (no-one knew it was bothering him) a bit odd or weird or strange. Usually these people are thought of as very caring but due to damage in their childhood to the way people cared or NOT about them or each other damages something in them and results in this odd or weird disposition.

For most of us in relationship a piece of information is processed as goes in A comes out B - for Martin it might go in A and come out Z and you have NO IDEA why - and that is what's going on now.

If he was Schizoid Personality Disorder Jeff Ireland blew it HUGE time in drafting him. No matter what those personality issues are going to leave your team with a lot of strange moments - and we got that on steroids.

Likely you have two very narcissistic parents who did not care for or know how to love at all. They may be the victim types who love to blame.

While I think SPD is a possibility, I think greater ground in this area is covered by simply postulating that he had a pre-existing psychological difficulty that interacted with the unique dynamics of the NFL locker room, and which he (and perhaps his mental health professionals, as well) is likely misattributing to the locker room in its entirety.

In other words, "I was normal before I played for the Dolphins, and now I'm a mess," rather than "the Dolphins' locker room contained just the right mix of ingredients to make me have a problem that other people with different psychological dynamics wouldn't have had."

One positive about the issue is that many Dolphin fans now have a focal point to express their pent-up anger at the teams year on year failure to produce a winner.

Just let him make his millions off goodell.

He can buy all the treatment he needs.....while attempting to rejoin the league.

Cmon dude, if something doesnt smell bad here to ya, you need to rethink here. A person with serious issues as you mention would not seek to rejoin a team. Especially just weeks from leaving. Makes no sense.

I think Ireland is that. He has been for the last three years or so.
Well, him and Ross. Martin's just a *****.

I'm sure when it's all
said and done, Martin will have all manner of psycological dysfunction,
from PTSD, to PMS, to OCD, to NRA, to CDC, to AFL-CIO. That's
the smart play by his legal team. With the self perpetuating nature
of the mental health community all it takes is for someone to toss
out a list of symptoms, and they will have enough people come rushing
forward to claim that they suffer from whatever the next thing is.

As I've said before; It's one thing if you work in a factory, or a nail
salon, or an office, certainly there's no excuse for name calling,
practical jokes, hazing or whatever. When you're on a path like
Martin's you don't get to suck up all the good things, then, when the
going gets tough, cry about it.

Yes. It was so bad that he wants to come back to it.

There is a team on Paris Island that will take him and straighten him out.

No there isn't.

It requires heart to go to that place or any other place where men are turned into
a functioning part of the greatest military on earth. Plus, if he's diagnosed with
mental dysfunction, none of those places will touch him.

None of those places will change you unless you want to change in the first place.

That's possible.. but my theory is that his biggest weakness which indirectly did him in, is his lack of self-control. When you look at linemen like Birk and Shlerreth who are now fractions of their playing weight, it's obvious that the over-eating impulse is indulgent and reversible. In this instance, it's his weight and IMO, his parents' concern over demonstrated gender confliction growing up that impelled him into football as an excuse to continue over-indulging and as a parental measure to expose him to more manly role models than his dad likely was.

If not for his insatiable appetite, IMO he'd now be in law school possibly, like his mom, having an eye toward perceived injustices like gay hate crimes, or possibly now be a happy floral designer. If you believe the parts of Richie Sr.s "testimony" that haven't yet come true, he's suicidal and a drug abuser - the former possibly due to being trapped like a fish out of water in a culture where he has no business or inclination being, and the latter, as an escape from that reality which, if anything, warped his perception of it and exacerbated his ability to live a lie. Combine the self-denial by his parents with their litigious nature, especially on hot-button issues, and voila.. you have this unnecessary clusterfork because Ireland should never have drafted Martin and Martin should have gone to law school or had his parents buy him a floral shop in West Hollywood. :idk:

Actually a person with a Schizoid Personality Disorder and is an accomplished athlete like Martin would absolutely seek to rejoin a team.

A team is the one place where Martin likely felt like he belonged.

Personality Disorders to the person who suffers from them taste like water to them - in other words its not like he feels anxious or upset because he comes across as strange or weird to others - he likely does not even realize he comes across that way. Plus his parents sound like super self absorbed people who have $ and power and are demanding that their Jonathan be put back in the league.

This is on Ireland and company folks - if they missed the warning signs of a troubled personality disorder of this type they shot themselves in the foot.

I am not trying to let Martin off the hook for a second - he blew this up or his peoples did but Ireland brought the gunpowder into a building full of sparks!

I do not believe he was a big drug abuser - maybe he tried some - but guarantee it did go well if he's schizoid.

Also about his parents and about Ireland you and I are saying the same thing.
Where we differ is I am hypothesizing that his troubles - psychologically - are more profound then what you are saying.

Actually someone with SPD would likely shun the interpersonal contact involved with team sports, and I think it's quite possible that if he has SPD dynamics, it's actually the case that he doesn't want to rejoin a team, and he's been advised to say publicly that he wants to play again to counter the perception that he's running from something bigger than the Dolphins' locker room.

Well, he claimed he didn't belong there, and was in fact, rejected.
Also, the pre draft reports noted nothing that was abnormal about Martin mentally.

It's difficult for someone performing a psychological evaluation to know the full truth about someone if that person is trying to present himself in a positive light, which would presumably be the case in a pre-draft evaluation. It's made that much more difficult when the person suffers from psychological problems that manifest themselves more internally (e.g., suicidal ideation, interpersonal discomfort, etc.) than externally (e.g., arrests for fighting, weapons charges, etc.).

In other words, the pre-draft psychological information obtained from Martin could be relatively worthless.
