Coming into this season the Miami Dolphins had a chose between to QB's. One has the reputation of being a game breaker (Daunte Culpepper) while the other is more of a game manager (Drew Brees). I don't think anyone here wold argue that a healthy Culpepper is the most, or at least in the top 3, physically gifted QB in the NFL. He is certainly more physically gifted than Drew Brees is. Here's where the decision gets dicey. Who was the last QB who is considered a game breaker or gunslinger to have won a Super Bowl?? In today's NFL it seems like the game manager types have been more successful. Let's take a look back.

1995 Packers over Patriots - Brett Favre = Gamebreaker/gunslinger
1996 Cowboys over Steelers - Troy Aikman = Manager
1997 Broncos over Packers - At this point in his career John Elway was a game manager. Remember the Broncos lost 4 SB's when Elway was a gamebreaker/ginslinger type QB.
1998 Broncos over Falcons - see above!!
1999 Rams over Titan - Kurt Warner = Gamebreaker/gunslinger, that makes 2
2000 Ravens over Giants - Trent Dilfer = Game manager
2001 Patriots over Rams - Tom Brady = Game manager
2002 Bucs over Raiders - Brad Johnson = Game manager
2003 Patriots over Panthers - Tom Brady = Game manager
2004 Patriots over Eaglesa - Tom Brady = Game Manager
2005 Steelers over Seahawks - Big Ben = Game manager

In the last 10 super bowls the winning team has had a game manager type QB 8 times and a gamebreaking QB twice. I understand football is a team game and QB's don't win Super Bowls but isn't that what game managing QB's are all about??? Make plays when they have to, don't try to do to much and let the other team force a mistake??? Just some food for thought.

With all that being said maybe Harrington is the better choice over Culpepper. However his 0-2 record as a starter and 63.5 passer rating doesn't make me warm and fuzzy.

Wow!!! This is actually a very impressive trend you have come upon my friend!! I now know which teams to bet on during super bowls, though last year would have been kinda tough since Hasselbach is also a game manager, but other than that, yeah, well done my friend, VERY well done indeed!!

good post. defense and a running game and a QB who can force you to respect the pass

That's good stuff.........i think cpep needs to understand this and be better at managing

Very solid post, can't argue the point.. You definately need a smarter QB these days to be successful.. What we need is a guy with the intelect of a Jay Fiedler and the arm of C-Pep.. That way when you throw a 5 yard out it doesn't go for 6 the other way.. lol

Well, obviously nobody is drawing final conclusions after 2 games on the road :) ... Keep in mind Harrington was NOT a Free Agent and had not declared available at the time they chose C-Pepp over Brees. But as soon as Joey began seeking interviews Saban rushed out of the Owners conference to meet with him.

I am thinking Joey Harrington has been MORE of an Insurance Policy or Backup QB ... all along. During camp and pre-season Saban saw everything he needed out of Joey and also came to a realization on Daunte. He was forced to start Pepp in Week1 because of the marketing and media Hype but also figured it would result in Joey playing sooner ... the QB Saban really wanted after all.

Nice find but this is very misleading. There are maybe 3-4 gunslingers at starter in this league (out of 32). That's less than 15%. Chances are much higher another team goes all the way. But this look back shows you that football is a teamgame. A good QB doesn't gurantee a SB. Thats the reason why Dan hasn't and Elway has rings.

Oh yeah he was a brilliant QB, no wonder he threw a pick every game and all most all of his passes were god awful.

Interesting post, What is the criteria used to label a QB a "Gamebreaker" vs a "Game Manager"?

That's why I said he needed a better arm, he could see where the balls needed to go he just physically couldn't get them there.. Believe me I am no Fiedler fan by any stretch of the imagination, but to say he wouldn't have been a better QB if he had an actual "NFL" arm would be wrong..

Interestin concept. I never sat down and thought about that way. But also i agree with what Eliot said being their are more "game managers" qb's in the league.

Don't think Daunte isn't intelligent. Many people think all he can do is throw it up to Moss, but his two best seasons was without Moss.

Excellent post. You can go even further back in history to see some other "manager" type QB's who have multiple rings on their fingers. Griese, Montana, Staubach, Bradshaw (although some would call him a gunslinger). You have nailed the main reason our boy Dan never got a ring.

I am also interested in just exactly what the criteria is for gunslinger v. manager. I mean, just from watching some play, you can get some idea, but it's hardly objective.

Number of throws? Perhaps, but maybe the game manager just has a good running game. I've seen Brady throw like crazy in some games when their run-game is ineffective. Yet, Brady was labeled (correctly, I think) as a manager. I think the relevant factor is a potent running game. Why gunsling and risk interceptions when your RB can pound it up the gut?

Notice how Elway was labeled as a manager only after he had Terrell Davis to hand off to? Marino, a gunslinger (I would assume, although I might argue Marino was both), had all of one 1,000 yard rushers (Abdul-Jabbar, 1996) to play with. Of course the former (and guys like Jim Kelly and Joe Montana) will be a game manager and Marino (sans a running game) will get more of a gunslinger label.
