A Question of YAC, and the Run Game

Aside from clay, noone on our team cab break a tackle for anything. Imo that's the leading reason

I think matthews flashed a bit in this regard. i like his ability.

You can get yac with any scheme, not sure what you mean. But yes, we didn't execute ours properly, my hope is we do so this year.

But really my point was that even if we fix the yac issue, there's still the weakness of the run game. There's been open speculation on the eagles blog, for example, that Lazor won't be able to import as effective an offense in Miami because we don't have good enough players to support a solid running game.

what i mean is some routes benefit yac (slant, post, fly, dig) and others don't (out, curl, comeback). we called a lot of plays that fell into the latter category.

ive been waiting since the bills killed us with them in the early 90s for us to successfully be able to run screens!

Off thread topic: I was at the '93 AFC Championship game in Miami when Thurman Thomas (& Kenneth Davis) ate us alive with screens. It's no lie when I say that game still haunts me till this day.

BTW, Thanks Honey B for this thread.

its painfully burnt into my memory. few years ago i was at a game, cant recall which but i saw a couple with shirts on from that game, it listed the date and title and had a dolphin mounting their logo with "screw buffalo" on it. if that was my shirt from that day i would have burnt it

The accuracy of the QB also plays a big role in YAC. It's more than just completing the pass. The QB has to get the ball and place the pass where the receiver can do something with it after the catch.

Excellent post

If you look at the team yac list and then put the QB in you can see why most teams are at the top of the list

Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Mathew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Phiilip Rivers, Big Ben round out the top 7

Which comes back to HB's point on the run. When teams have no respect for the run game, they are gonna get to the QB sooner, and the QB has to throw sooner, which means not throwing where he wants to but, when and where he has to.

I've erased all of last year's games but, would like to know how many times a receiver had a fair chance of YAC and not made them for just one game as a sampling, as opposed to other reasons. Anyone able to take a look at that?

absolutely it does. i even mentioned quality of QB play in my initial post

It is not necessarily true that when a defense doesn't respect the running game they will get to the QB sooner because there are things an offense can do to counter that. Nevertheless, the QB still has to be accurate with his passes and if he places the ball correctly and depending on the route ie slant, crossing pattern, skinny post, etc the receiver should be able to gain some yards after the catch.

There are things that teams can do, like screens, roll outs, TE in to help, and draws, to slow down the rush but, have not seen our Dolphins able to do much of anthing last year. They all require being able to block.

YAC is such a over blown stat. That would be 4-5th on what I want a WR to do.

YPR is what matters (since it also includes YAC).

I want a WR to

A) get open

B) catch anything that comes close.

I'll take run blocking over YAC here etc.

And as many people know, it is often the schemes that bring or take away YAC. For instance, basketball teams that attempt a lot of 3 point shots do it because that is their offense.
