New Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey and HC Joe Philbin first bonded when Philbin interviewed amongst others with Hickey for Bucs HC job 2 yrs ago.

Hopefully they will have a better relationship than Philbin and Ireland.

A good relationship between HC and GM is a good sign! Hopefully, we can translate that into performance on the field.

That can't be correct, the new GM is just a pawn to the Philbin/Aponte hierarchy!

On a more important note. It's really interesting to see that more than likely the OC and GM were both hired due to their relationship/commonalities with Philbin instead of Aponte. Also, with the news that candidates wouldn't take the job because they didn't have the power to fire the HC just shows who is actually in charge. It's Philbin, as he is who Ross is now backing. Now we will really get to see what his vision for the team probably was/is during this offseason.

Cue the Hayden Fox, Holy **** your right, Philbin is gonna screw this franchise, reply.

Not only did they have a chance to bond during those interviews, they knew each other well before that. Hickey used to be a regional scout for the Iowa area and knew Philbin very well when he was a position coach with the Packers.

That's too complicated for espn viewers.

I hate to be the turd in your punch bowl, or Kool aid should I say. But, you do realize Hickey was not even close to our top choice. He was the only one willing to take the job....

Correct, and that's what bothers me. That said, I remain convinced that the team is NOT telling the whole truth here and that under this new power structure that other candidates balked at, Joe Philbin indeed gained a lot more power.

Yep. Steve Ross doubled down on Joe Philbin. I hope that he was right to do so. I'm not a huge fan of Philbin but I've wondered for a while now how a team with glaring personnel deficiencies with a supposedly terrible quarterback was able to win 8 games. Perhaps Joe is doing something right. We shall see.

That said, the Lazor hire was about two things, IMO. One, Lazor and Philbin have a lot in common on a personal level as I understand it, and two that Philbin does not like to micromanage his coordinators. Lazor will not only be free to run the offense the way he wants to under Philbin, but he will call the plays. In Detroit, he would have been Caldwell's administrative assistant pretty much, and would not have been able to call the plays.

I've observed previously that "chemistry" is one of those etherial visceral reactions you really cannot account for - which goes a long way in overlooking/minimizing shortcomings either on the conscious or sub-conscious levels and over-emphasizing strengths in a desire to hire someone. There's no acccounting for it until you're face to face in the meeting. So on one hand, it's a good thing since it's critical that Philbin and the GM are on the same page, but the flip-side of that is a concern that Philbin is so entrenched with Ross to wield so much influence over him.

FWIW, in speaking with a buddy who is still in the business running a firm that staffs the highest corporate level execs, with no axes to grind since he roots for SF, his reaction was the same as mine: a good outside search firm would never have even had Hickey on its radar considering what a slow tracker he was with the organization that knew him best and that for an outside staffing firm getting up to 30% of the GMs first year estimated comp, presenting someone who was weeks away from being on the street (vs recruiting viable candidates who were not necessarily actively looking but prudent enough to be convinced to keep their options open) did not provide any utility for the client.

From various reports he was the one willing to take the job with the caveat that he wouldn't have the ability to fire Philbin. All of the other's wanted that in their contract. So this would have left Philbin with a one year, prove it, grace period that Ross wasn't willing to offer.

Another point people are making that I don't understand is that Hickey was the Fins final choice. Well that is blatantly false. They didn't offer the position to Gaine and they didn't offer a second interview to a number of candidates so to say they got the last person left is incorrect.

True Vk but this isn't "Suits" these positions are so few to begin with that life experience Trumps the "next great
Thing" IMHO

Dude from the Pats isn't an up and Comer either based on this theory

But I appreciate what you are saying

Huh what???? they bonded?? GMs and HC's are supposed to work well together? I just thought they fought each other and try to get each other fired

I'm fine with Hickey. For all we know he may turn out to be the best choice in the long run. Picking players is a crap shoot anyways but maybe with him and Philbin actually working together instead of at odds like the last guy we might build a solid team.
I also like the fact the bean counter lady will report to him and not Ross.
The three headed structure was never going to work anyways.
