NFL Network's Adam Schefter believes the Dolphins "would be thrilled" to make Jake Long the No. 1 overall pick and sign him to a contract worth about 3% less than what JaMarcus Russell got last year.

Long continues to be the only player Miami is seriously negotiating with, making him the favorite to go first. However, the Dolphins are thought to have given Long a deadline for a deal to be done. That timeframe is uncertain.

I guess maybe Ireland was blowing some smoke with those comments. As a proud member of the Jake Long Fan Club I want The Giant in a Dolphin Uniform come draft day.

Do some of the cap experts know what they mean by 3% less then what Russell got.

i wouldnt mind jake long at all and i believe he is s TRUE lt
and NOT a rt. 2 sacks and 2 penalties at lt in a big school
against BIG TIME competition in 4 years doesnt say rt only.

but..... there is MASS value in this draft and i believe this
draft is one of the most talent packed in the last 25 years
so i wouldnt mind the finz stacking up on players in the
second and third rounds.

the media and sports writers and ex gm's and talking heads
and blogers have ALL led us to believe that NO TEAMS
have contacted the finz [and wont] about trading up to
the top spot, but, ireland FINALLY admitted a few teams
actually HAVE spoken with them about a trade and that
he believes those offers will get stronger come draft time
and a few more teams will get in the mix.

there have been WAY WORSE drafts than this and there
has not been ONE DRAFT where there were NO offers
for the #1 spot. getting the player of your choice is a
pretty strong drug, even if the price is high.

i see miami actually trading the pic now which is probably
in the teams best interest.

jamarcus russell signed a contract worth $68 million. 3% of 68 mil is 2,040,000 which means longs contract would be worth a little less then 66 million

Russell's deal was for $61M, with $32M guaranteed. There are also another $7M in incentives in the contract.

So, Long would be looking at 6 years, $59.2M, with $31M guaranteed, plus whatever incentives they decide to include.

Calvin Johnson got 6 years, $64M, with $27.5M guaranteed as the #2 pick last year. So, that offer to Long is not that bad for him. It gives him more guaranteed money than last year's #2 pick. So, that could get the deal done. And it's certainly a lot better than the 5 year, $42.5M deal with $23M guaranteed that Joe Thomas got as the #3 pick.

this blows away all that we thought before

I thought that we were really low-balling Jake and making the same offer to Gholston

I hope this is true and if it is then Jake's agent better wake up and smell the coffee

Did anyone hear the clip on Mad Dog's show today of Ireland accidentally saying that the draft pick will be a cornerstone of the defense?

When the reporters laughed and told him what he said he corrected himself and said "offense or defense" LOL

Chris Long all the way baby!!!! :sidelol:

How can you give C Long 32M guaranteed - 10M+ per year to play pretty much a new position. He has almost no track record at OLB. Is he a great college player - yes for 1 year! You can't pay out that kind of money IMO for C Long - way too big of a risk. You need a pro bowl starter for the next 6 years for that kind of money - J Long is the only pretty sure pro bowler at the top and at a big time position and also our biggest need position. It all fits. People can talk all they want about quality tackles later in the draft - well you don't find a 1st year starting LT floating around in the 2nd and 3rd rd usually. We need 2-3 tackles so just because we get J Long we would still need to add another later on. We would be fine without C Long - we would have another mediocre OL without J Long! Sign the big guy - what a difference the OL becomes with 1 signing - pretty much a no brainer to me.

As PT Barnum always said: "There is a sucker born every minute"

Exactly. Talent level being equal (I think Jake a higher quality player than Chris, but whatever), why bring in a player that is not an immediate need. We have two good OLBs in Porter and Taylor. At OT we have Carey and who else? One pro-Chris Long person said that Jake Long supporters don't have the foresight to see why Chris Long should be the pick. But why do we need foresight to see what will be a need in a couple of years when we see a glaring hole right now? Not to mention great linemen are tougher to come by compared to linebackers, unless you break the bank for those linemen.

I doubt we'll take Chris Long unless he agrees to a contract first and they haven't even talked to him yet....I don't think Ireland's coment meant anything....I still believe that they do want Jake tho I'd be happy with either one.

Ozzy rules!!

The thing I don't understand is why would we draft anyone but Jake. I mean, we spent a great deal of money on Joey Porter last year. THe only way I could see this making sense is if we get rid of JT or we move JP to the inside. Personally I think thats just plain stupid in the first place. I say finish this thing and sign Long already.

JT will not be a Dolphin in 2008. And it's extremly doubtful that Joey Porter will be here beyond this year, unless he has a really strong bounce-back season. We offered $40M to Calvin Pace to come in and play OLB. That should indicate that either Taylor or Porter is not in the plans for this season. Ultimately, I think JT gets traded for a 2nd round pick, either this upcoming week or during the draft. While both sides have said the right things about keeping JT, they'll make this trade, and both sides will say that they talked about it and felt like it was in the best interests of the team and the player. As for Porter, it's a huge salary cap hit to cut him this year. But, next year, it's not so bad. And really, we have the cap room to take the cap hit this year. And that's even more true if we trade Taylor. I wouldn't be surprised to see us trade Taylor, draft an OLB and ILB, moving Torbor to the strong side, and cutting Porter and eating his salary.
