I LOVE Nick Saban, I think he will bring us back a championship, maybe even this season..so before you get all angry, put those things into consideration. Although I love Saban, Im not in this "Saban can do no wrong' fan club that seems to be sweeping this board. To be honest, I greatly disagreed with how the Gus issue was handled.

BELIEVE ME, things were NOT handled the right way, I see this as Sabans first mistake, although not a big one.

Gus is established in our system and we KNOW he can win games for us. He created a great chemistry with chambers as the year went on.

He's backed up Pep before, shouldnt b eab big deal, and im sure he would have restructured his deal like his agent hinted.

Gus was incredibley professional. He was a stand up guy who dealt with a lot of CRAP from sour fans who didnt wana see him the starter, yet he kept his head and his game up throughout the season.

Now, we have the burden of going out and wasting time, and possible compensation on trying to find a back up qb who wont be established in the system, who will have no relation to our players, and who will be unproven...why does this make any sense Nick?:fire:

You know I read Sabans book, and he seems to be huge on being a player coach in the sense that he will look after all of his players the same and blah blah blah. But the truth is, as soon as a better solutin came along, Gus was axed like it was nothing. Im not saying keep the guy around for sentimental reasons, I understand this is a business as well, but to have Gus remark on how 'he was placed on the back burner' has to leave a sour taste in the mouths of some of these players....

he would have cost close to 5 million against the cap and would not renegociate his contract. 5 million for a backup quarterback is outragous. and i believe we tried to resign him after he was cut, but he chose the rams.

Y spend 5 million on a back up QB, when we could get someone like LaVar Arrington for 6 million at a position that we really need? Now I'm not sayin we should spend that much, but nonetheless, I would rather have a starter on defense than a back up on offense.

I don't, this is, like it or not, a result orented business. Saban needs the kind of QB that will work for him. The team needs a QB that has what it takes to win. Gus could have stayed on, he ius a career backup nothing more. If Gus thought he was gonna be the starter this year that's his problem, but take a poll across the NFL and ask "how many feel Gus is a starting QB" and see what the results will be. Gus didn't have to leave, he could've stayed and played his roll, he chose ego over winning. We will sign another veteran to backup Pep and thats that. BTW, Saban will make mistakes, I for one don't care I'll take Saban and his mistakes all day long over any other coach out there.

NEWSFLASH:

Gus was being paid too much to be our backup. He was also looking to follow Linehan after we traded for Culpepper. The only real choice saban had was whether or not he wanted Culpepper or gus to be our starter. Gus moved on because he wanted to and Saban couldnt offer him anything past a backups salary. Do you really know enough about Gus situation and the teams cap room and hopes in Free Agency to be critical of Saban on Gus signing with the Rams?

obviously, he was not communicated to correctly. I also think the fans were ruthless to him and that is the underlying factor about the parting shot. Saban only furthered that notion by ignoring him in the process. Of course, Saban is a busy man, he doesnt have time for everything but this will not be a huge mistake, but i think people should realize how Gus would have helped up this year. Now we will have two QB's who have to get used to everything. Maddox may end up being the guy.

This is the type of post I hate. Believe you? Why? Who are you? I dont know you, why should I believe you? Am I supposed to value you your opinion as much as you do simply because you say so, or you mine? Doesnt make sense to me  Not picking on your opinion, just the way you state it.

He never lied to Gus, his agent even said so, that Mick told them they were looking to upgrade qb and he would have to take a sign pay cut, which he refused, he wanted to be paid like a starter when he wasnt going to be.

So basically you are saying because wasa professional stand up kind of guy we should have foregone getting an upgrade for the sake of placating Gus? Kinda naive thinking if you ask me.

Two things...first, you obviously didn't watch Gus play much...he was terrible most of the year...He was horribly inaccurate all season long. He was, at best, a so-so QB. Fiedler did a better job for us than Gus, IMO...

Saban upgraded the position. BTW, knowing the system is very overrated concern for an experienced QB...and DC knows the system anyways. Gus was not going to be our starter, and yes, Saban did want him to stay here as a backup, but at backup pay...HE wouldn't do that....

Second, Gus decided he would not be here unless he was the starter or got starter pay, which was not going to happen, whether the new guy was DC or Brees or whomever.

This was not his first mistake, I can't see where you would get that idea about this move...period...In fact, to me, it just goes to prove how much of a "me" player Gus is...the coach upgrades his position for the betterment of the team, and Gus throws a hissy and won't take backup pay to be a backup ??

wow what did he say that was controversial? Way to refute his post with facts.

Gus was costing the team way too much. He and his agent kept saying they wanted something fair to both parties, but a fair salary from the Phins standpoint would be one that compensated like the backup he truly was. The truth of the matter is that when Saban released Gus, he ended a LONG chain of backup QBs that we have been subjected to since Danny's retirement. Great move IMO.

That's all fine and dandy. But Gus did not want to restructure and there is no way in heel the Phins were going to pay Gus 5 mil to be a back-up.

I think Saban's first mistake was bringing in that loser. He clearly doesnt make the same mistake twice. With him and Howard gone we are a much better team
