Advice on uploading pictures on this site

I wondered what software I should use to save pictures. Every time I try to upload a pic, I am told that it is the wrong format.

avatars are usually GIFs or JPGs you can in IE just right click on an image and either save it or view the properties and it will tell you what the URL is...

GRRRRRRRRRR. I still can't do it. I have saved file as .GIF, but I just get an error message when I try to upload picture.
