AFC focus: Ranking The Conerbacks

I know everyone is going to bash these rankings.....but I can't really disagree with them.

Dolphins have the most underrated group of corners in the entire NFL. We've got 3 (Will Allen, Andre Goodman, Travis Daniels) #2/3 corners and some talented wild cards in Jason Allen and Shirdonya Mitchell that could be very good. I'd go as far to say, that we have some of the best depth at the position in the entire NFL.

Do we have the best group of corners in the NFL? Of course not, but we're not as bad as having the 14th ranked set of corners in the AFC. It would be more accurate to say we should rank around 14th in the NFL.

Teams that they ranked ahead of us and how their they did defensively last year:

Bengals: 62.88 completion % (349/555), 7.26 ypa, 24 touchdowns, 19 interceptions.

Texans: 65.08 completion % (328/504), 7.21 ypa, 22 touchdowns, 11 interceptions.

Titans: 63.02 completion % (334/530), 7.08 ypa, 24 touchdowns, 17 interceptions.

Then there's the Dolphins...

Dolphins: 55.82 completion % (278/498), 6.58 ypa, 22 touchdowns, 8 interceptions.

Goodman's shoulder is a concern, but the same shoulder bothered him last year and he did fine, I wouldn't expect a dropoff this year. Travis Daniels is finally at 100%. As far as depth is concerned, Jason Allen/Shirdonya Mitchell should be a substantial upgrade over Eddie Jackson/Michael Lehan.

Our secondary as a whole should be better than it was last year. I expect about the same completion% against, a lower ypa against, fewer touchdowns against and more interceptions.

As long as we can get pressure on the QB, we should be good to go even if our secondary is mediocre.

Just about where I'd put em. When a DE tops the team in ints, something's wrong. It'd be interesting to see how well this CB unit would hold if they didn't have outstanding pressure on the QB as well as a MLB who can eat up the middle of the field.

Will Allen is the strongest coverage corner.
Not a very good sign indeed. He's at best a 2nd CB.

They don't get turnovers. And that is probably the most important stat seeing how turnovers = wins.

Turnovers are important, but the ability to cover is more important.

If Bell plays the full season, I expect us to intercept twice as many passes as we did last year.

There isn't much difference between a healthy Travis Daniels/Andre Goodman and Will Allen.

I disagree with the Sporting News' assessment of our corners. I think our best cover corner is Andre Goodman, not Will Allen. Unfortunately, Goodman struggles with big receivers and is coming off an injury. I'd give our corners a rating of C for now (C- without Goodman).

I think its more on interceptions than anything else. I have to admit only have 8 in an entire season is quite a concern.

Let's not forget that 2 of our 8 ints came from my boy JT. Our DBs just didn't do a whole lot of anything to put anyone on notice. I think the ranking is fine until they prove otherwise either individually or as a group.

I think Dre Bly is one of the most overrated players in the league. He'll make some spectacular returns on INts but he'll get beat alot more than not and w/ Champ on the other side he's going to get picked on alot.
