AFC Focus: Ranking the guards/centers

I think our O-Line will be better than last year.

I like what we have done on the O-line this year.

I want all of these so called experts (yahoo sports) to just keep down grading our guys. So when we step on to the field everyone gets blown away by how good we play. When you look at the guys that are named above us and realize that you have undrafted FAs and last years rookies in the mix on the top three teams we have a chance to be very good, with a little luck.

Undrafted for a reason

with a lot of luck

I think the Chargers have the best line in the whole league, let alone the AFC. Chiefs should drop a couple spots. Losing Shields will really hurt them, especially since Roaf is long gone too. The Dolphins are ranked right. I think they'll move up a few spots during the season though.

When you take the teal-shades off, this is what you'll see: last year's center gets moved to right guard for a 2nd round rookie (as opposed to a supposedly "can't miss" Top 5 rookie) and the left guard is an aging FA not resigned by his previous team. That's NOT a prescription for interior OL excellence when there are teams like the Pats and Chargers that return all their starters, all of whom are proven, quality veterans.

A lot of teams prefer to take OL later in the draft, looking for raw talent because lots of college teams don't teach the OL skills the pros need, but that means that it takes a while for these youngsters to come up to snuff -- usually takes 2 or 3 years, and the lower the draft round, the longer it generally takes. I don't know if Satele fits this model, but some of Miami's other young OLers fit it. It's just not realistic to think that these guys are going to be able to step right in and play well.

If the Fins' starting trio proves themselves, then they'll get ranked higher, but at this point, the ranking seems fair.

We didn't have a top 5, can't miss pick. We did, however, pick up a center that likely fits our system better than any other. While some may argue that Free should have been a target for us, we honestly had other gaps to fill. There's no teal shades involved, we drafted Satele in the 2nd round and he's expected to start. Our guard situation may not be settled, but center almost certainly is.

I think this is and will be the biggest hurdle for us to over come. On the negative side, the line is completely revamped, and they will never be able to gel enough for us to win games early in the season. Bad start and we all call for Cam and Houcks heads!!!! On the positive side, the line is completely revamped. We have a supposed O-line Guru. Cam told him to put who you want, coach them up, and be ready for some creative play calling. I will make the rest of the offensive players, accountable and ready to play. I have put who I want where I want, and we will run a system that will be successfull and win games early. We all crown Houck a genius, and Cam the 2nd coming of Don Shula.

Good post. But 2 things:

1 Maybe Satele's learning curve will be smaller because he already is a great pass blocker from that Hawaii/June Jones offense.

2 Don't be surprised if Mormino starts over Liwienski.

Undrafted for a reason, you bet:

New England:Steve Neal undrafted FA, Logan Mankins R-05, Dan Koppers 3rd year.

Chargers:Kris Dielman undrafted FA, Nick Hardwick 2nd year.

Colts:Jeff Saturday undrafted FA, Ryan Lilja undrafted FA, Jake Scott R-05

There are PB'ers in this group, both FA, and young players and I would only call it luck for the teams lucky enough to get them. I hope we have that kind of luck, we are due, thats for sure.
