Thought I'd break down a great scenario where Pats and Jets could both miss the post-season at 11-5. I got a little help from the other site but here it is.
Its a little bit complicated but if our Dolphins win out and finish 11-5, it could create a 3 way tie with the Pats and Jets (assuming the Jets win all their games except the Miami game) we will be AFC East champions and at worst a #3 seed with our win against Denver propelling us ahead of them. That would possibly setup a playoff date against Baltimore or NE, with the Jets being eliminated at 11-5, that would be awesome.
The reason why we win the 3 way tie at 11-5 is to figure out the records vs common opponents which involes 12 games. The Patriots and Dolphins would be 10-2 while the Jets are 8-4 making them eliminated.
Both the dolphins and Patriots lost both of their non-common games for Miami that is (Hou,Bal) and the Patriots that is (Indy/Pitts). That would force the next tie-breaker to be used. Conference Record. If the Patriots win out, they'll finish unbeaten vs the NFC while we lost to Arizona. That means we would have a one game advantage in the conference.
If Indy, Miami, Denver, Baltimore, Patriots, Jets all finish at 11-5. I believe Miami would still be the #3 seed, and Denver the #4 seed. Not sure how the other 4 would play out. It would get a little complicated.
As per Buffalo who cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are many other scenarios that could be played out but I like how we control our destiny while the Pats and Jets don't
