The rundown of failed Dolphins guards is longer than Santa’s naughty list.
Since 2012, they have drafted four — Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner, Jamil Douglas and Isaac Asiata — and signed stopgaps like Daryn Colledge, Sam Brenner and Jermon Bushrod. They even tried Mike Pouncey at the position for a season.
None has stuck.
So it’s poetic that their most promising young interior lineman is a guy no one in the league wanted just 13 months ago
Jesse Davis was out there for anyone to sign in November 2016. That is, he was until the Dolphins took a chance on him. But even they were only half-sold on him; Miami signed Davis to its practice squad at the time, not its active roster.

I'm ok with him next year, but Miami has to look at this line and make some real heartfelt decisions. Salary, injury and depth need to be looked at. Tannehill requires a Cadillac line, so money and picks have to be spent

Talk about a unit has been disappointing and continue to to be a problem for years for this team, why has this problem persisted for so long?

This is why Ross needs to sell the team; every decision he's made has been the wrong one. They still can't build a solid, physically dominating (or at least slightly above average) o-line. They weren't too far away when Ross took over, IMO needing just a RT and more talent at the offensive skill positions. Hand-picked by Ross, Philbin gutted the team of what talent they had. Incognito and Jerry are both still playing, and playing better than any Guard Miami has had since their release. From Ireland to Hickey to Tannenbaum to Grier (with Tannenbaum still in charge), they're still clueless on how to build a solid o-line. They have 3 first round picks who IMO aren't cutting it and will be costing WAY too much money for so little production. They're on their second coaching regime under Ross, with both regimes wanting athletic "finesse" linemen to execute their fancy schemes. Unfortunately for us fans, their preferred type of o-linemen are consistently dominated by tough, physical d-lines. I see a Front Office with inept leadership and poor talent evaluation skills, and a second coaching staff that thinks they can win with a line full of ballerinas instead of road-graders... it's not surprising that they're still not a playoff caliber team. If Ross won't sell the team, he should at least clean house completely and find someone other than Tannenbaum to run the team.

Actually, if Tannehill picks up where he left off, this would be a gross mis-statement. :sorry

Despite PFF's 2017 OL ranking the Fins @30th out of 32nd, during THill's scoreboard-worthy 7-1 run he managed to put up a 101.5 QBR, 69% completion rate, 13TDs to only 4Ints and a 7.4YPA < all top 8-10 worthy. Imagine if he had even the equivalent of a "Ford Focus" OL in front of him

Now the answer really is that Tannehill, like any good to potentially very good QB can benefit from a decent to good rushing game... case in point, while the Phins OL was ranked 30th last season, their running game was 9th most productive in the league. Just put a Chevy OL in front of RT17 and I think we'll be fine in that department

So hope that helps to put things into proper perspective. :thumbsup:thumbsup

Amen brother....Preach on...with all of the issues pointed out by numerous posters...this will ALWAYS be the key...without a solid foundation on Offense and Defense this team is going nowhere...If you can't build a line...a group of guys that work together... then you can draft or acquire any skill position player you want and they will be what we are...mediocre and inconsistent...

It's beyond comprehension why this organization can't get that piece right....

We should go full Moneyball this offseason so we can stop overpaying for mediocrity

The question is, where is Davis best suited? Right Guard or Right Tackle? He seemed to play well at Right Tackle previously while being average at Right Guard until the Buffalo game - when he really played well at RG.

Not to slag on the article too much, but Davis is already better than decent. :D

I'm glad we finally found ONE offensive lineman that is a possible long term solution. I _thought_ we had one in Tunsil ... but he really sat on his laurels once Branden Albert left. At best we have 2 OL positions filled ... and a pricey, injury-prone, inconsistent C, and at least 2 gaping holes. I can't see us re-signing James ... he's had 4 years to put it together, and predictably, he hasn't. Someone will splurge on his potential because he shows flashes ... I just don't see it being us.

Jesse Davis, kid out of Idaho, big strong, came in underweight and underscouted, but now bulked up and with NFL experience and playing for his life with a chip on his shoulder. I'll roll with that and look to fill the 2 or 3 other spots next year.

I realize it sounds like heresy to some around here, but really, **** Jonathan Martin! If not for his pansy ass, we'd still have Incog.
