Before I begin let me confess that I was among one of those who thought Miami would completely dominate the game and was expecting at least a 20 point margin of victory. While I was happy with the win it did not leave me with a good taste in my mouth, and so I watched and re-watched the game 4 times in order to try and understand what the heck went wrong. So below you will find my observations.

1. For all the RT haters you need to realize that Ryan on had the ball for only 4 drives in the first half and one of those drives was at the end of the half which resulted in a touch down. The first drive ended due to poor execution in the run game. (Failure to convert a 3rd and one) The second drive stalled for a couple of reasons, a busted play, no run game and a failure to convert a 3rd and long. The third drive after the Grims pick was a fail once again by us not having established any kind of run game and not being able to convert a 4th and 1. (I like the call of trying to go for it on 4th and 1 but if you are going to try and pick up 1 yard on the ground why not put in some big bodies to block?) Yes Ryan missed Simms in the endzone, that one is on him. I will however give him a pass on the sideline throw to Stills. I watched this play over and over and if you look close you will see Ryan running to his right toward the sideline, the position of his body and the angle of the play made it a harder throw to make then how it appeared.

2. Offense never had a chance to get into any rhythm because they barely touched the ball, coupled with the lack of a run game in the first half was why offensively we looked bad.

3. Our defense was just not prepared for the scheme the Redskins defense brought. To echo what others have been saying the Skins were chop blocking on almost every play and if you look at the play where Vernon got injured you will see that he was chop blocked and leg whipped. We had more guys on the ground then there were chasing the play. I hate to pick on on the LBs but they were running into blocks and the D-Line could not get off blocks. I think our D was expecting a much easier day and got shell shocked. Glad it happened on week one with a victory, and I strongly believe that we will not see it this bad again this year.

4. In the second half there was a drive that most likely would have led to a score if Matthews makes that 1st down grab (easy catch, just dropped it) instead we end up with sack fumble on that drive.

5. We finally have play makers on this team that can impact the outcome of the game. Individual effort won this game because they sure did not play well as a team.

6. Our defensive scheme was rather vanilla. We really did not show any creative blitz packages. I think this was mostly due to the fact that I think that we really expected to dominate their line and were taken by surprise. We did make some changes in the second half which helped.

7. I don't think it was as bad as most people are making it. I think it looks worse because of the high expectations we have for this team this year. Lets not forget that in the past this team would have lost a game like this. In the past we don't get that 4th quarter interception, In the past we don't successfully run out the clock.

8. I really think that we were caught a little off guard. Definitely think things will jell better as the starters play together more. I don't think the starters got enough work during preseason. Things will get better have faith.

The team has to play better that's the bottom line. But in week 1 we do need to understand nobody is at their best yet and if you are, well you are peaking too early

Agree...they were just sloppy and underprepared. It's week 1 so they get a pass. We'll see how corrections are made.

Haha, I feel for you rewatching the game 4 times with our garbage offense

Good post. On offense losing Dion so early forced us to improvise as well. Lets see how Stoneburner can do in relief, he looked good in preseason against scrubs. Very happy we got rid of LaMike, Seemed like a ****y loose cannon (when I watched his interviews) and a loose cannon who is not very good does not need to be on the team.

I totally agree that this was a game we usually lose and that individual efforts won that game for us. Landrys return was great teamwork on ST but other than that we didn't do much teamwork. When they did (2 minute drill before half and the final drive) they looked great. I'm one of those that think we just played a team out to prove something with a great gameplan. If they come out flat against jax I will certainly be worried about the teams fire though. Seems like we're always worried about that.

Yes, he should feel SOOO bad for watching a game that we won! :rolleyes2:

I didn't say I feel bad about watching the game four times after a win. The reason for watching it four times was to try and figure out why we struggled over a game that everyone predicted would be a walk in the park for us.

The lack of a power running game of any type killed us. It killed on on short 3rd down conversions and on red zone drives.

I watched the game 4 times. Here is my analysis:

Landry is sick
Cameron is going to end up being worth every penny we spent on him
Thankful we have the QB we have and not the guy on the other team (or the QB on many other teams)
Suh and Wake are going to cause a lot of penalties/headaches for other teams. We started to see their impact in the second half. Just imagine when they're in mid-season form... yikes.

I always love when people say "we barely touched the ball on offense". Whose fault is that?

Part offense part defense... As simple as that, offense couldn't get 2 yards with 2 downs to play with, defense couldn't get off the field... there are plenty of reasons why we didn't crush the Skins like many of us though we would.... but all in all, I'm glad we finally have a team that can manage a win when everything doesn't go their way...

JD said it perfectly

Our C game beat their A game. Good teams have the ability to do that
