...I have to say I'm impressed, and I see why the coaching staff and Jeff Ireland are so high on him.
I'll admit, I wasn't thrilled about the prospect of us taking him and these are the reasons why:
* 61% completion percentage in today's college football isn't impressive, and doesn't lend to the notion of an accurate QB
* Converted WR?
* 19 starts at QB; inexperience
* Why couldn't he beat out Jerrod Johnson prior to his Junior year?
* High hopes for A&M in the pre-season yet went 7-6 with some blown games in 2nd half
I'll also be the first to admit that though I watch college FB, I had a cursory knowledge of A&M, and only watched half of a game last season; I was ignorant to who and what Ryan Tannehill is.
Now, after spending the last few hours watching a good number of his games from last season, I'm actually very impressed and happy with our new QB, and here's why:
* Though his comp % was 61, he is actually pretty accurate and has good ball placement. I believe I read that he had a ton of drops from his receivers last season; if I'm not mistaken I heard 68 total, and you see it on tape; they dropped a ton of balls in the few games I watched. If you add that 68 back into his completions, brings his number to 74%. Though I understand this methodology isn't an exact science, it lends more to what I saw in those games.
* He is very athletic. For a guy his size, he can move; not RG3, but better than most QBs in the NFL
* He ran the WC offense in college, and he looked decisive and deadly accurate on those bubble screens and quick hitches, skinny posts, quick slants, etc., a key component in this offense
* He looked very much in control of the offense; coming to the line reading the defense, calling hot routes
* Strong arm, quick release
* I just liked the rhythm on his drop back, set, and release
I won't profess to be a football guru or anything of the such, but I'd like to think I know a little something. I don't expect Tannehill to be ready to start on opening day, as he's still a bit inexperienced, still learning the nuances of the position, and will need to adjust to the speed of the NFL, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. If Philbin and Sherman can develop this kid, I could see him being one hell of a QB for us.
On one of the games, the comentator (I believe Gus Johnson) mentioned the reason he didn't get the nod over Jerrod Johnson earlier was because of Mike Sherman's loyalty to Johnson. He worked closely with him to help him become a more polished QB and wanted to give him every opportunity to lead the team. Tannehill was finally given the nod halfway into his junior season after spending the previous two at WR.
