Mario Williams DE / Miami Dolphins

Potential Landing Spot: Dallas Cowboys

Trade Compensation: 2017 sixth round pick

The Dolphins have cornered the market on older passer rushers with Mario Williams and Cameron Wake. Wake is coming off an Achilles tear that cost him the final nine games last season. He is beginning to cut into Williams' playing time after starting the season as a situational pass rusher.

Dallas looks like a team that could have a deep playoff run. Putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks is still an issue despite ranking 10th in total defense and eighth in scoring defense. Dallas has Pro Football Focus' second-worst pass rush grade this season.

The Cowboys could use Mario Williams to get after the QB. USATSI

Williams isn't the same player that garnered a six-year, $96 million contract from the Bills in 2012 but he would be an upgrade for the Cowboys. A sixth-round pick is the same as the Bears received last season from the Panthers in a trade for Jared Allen.

Interesting, but I strongly doubt the Dolphins do that for a sixth round pick. He can help them now and they want to make a run at the playoffs. Trading him would reduce depth and pass rush is the only hope the defense has to prevent exposure of the secondary.

Not for a 6th. They need to offer more of they want him. Otherwise we are keeping him. We aren't giving up on our season

The NFL trade deadline is like the most talked about thing that yields the fewest results in the history of the world. Every year there is tons of hype and every year there is maybe one trade.

Remember Dion Jordan is coming back at some point. Wake and Branch are playing well as the starters and Mario is only getting 20-25 snaps a game...at $17 million over the 2 years they signed him for.

I would absolutely take a 6th rounder for him. Jared Allen was twice the player Mario is and that's all he cost. Getting that contract off the books would be the bigger benefit in the long run. It's not going to happen but I would do it.

The Pats just made 2 trades I believe. Traded a TE and got a LB I think

After all this team has been through with Dion Jordan I don't think they would pin their hopes on him coming back and making a significant impact. Recent reports suggest that the Dolphins think he will be back close to the end of the season, so if that happens [which is no guarantee], they are going to have a long time between now and any potential return for Dion Jordan. That's discounting the time he requires to get into football shape, get acquainted with the scheme, and earn the trust of the coaching staff to put him out there. As much as I'd like to see Dion return and get some playing time before the end of the season and give us some sort of return, it is possible that Dion doesn't actually end up spending much time on the field this season.

As for a sixth round pick for Mario, well I suppose it is better than nothing, but Mario is still useful to have around the team. We currently sit with a 3-4 record. This team is not looking down, it is looking up. I'm looking at our schedule post bye week and we play the Jets, Chargers, Rams, 49ers, and Ravens over our next five games. If our team continues to play well, cut down on the silly mistakes and penalties, then there is a chance we can be heading into week 14 with a winning record. Granted that means going 4-1, but if we have play off aspirations - which I think was an aim before this season started - then they are teams we need to beat. I fancy our chances of winning 3 or 4 of those games. If we head into the Cardinals game at 6-6 or 7-5, we are sitting pretty for the last four games. At that point we may need a veteran like Mario Williams rather than a sixth round draft pick. Obviously Mario is not the player he once was, but he can still be useful on a team with play off aspirations. If we were rebuilding I could understand getting draft picks for veterans past their prime, but we are a team built to compete for a wildcard play off spot and I think keeping Mario around is of better use.

I wouldn't get too worked up about getting that contract off the books because that saving is not going to mean much until next season, but even then we can save $8.5 million by cutting him and only taking a $2 million hit in dead money. So the team can cross that bridge when they come to it. I would be in agreement with you about getting that deal off the books this season if we hadn't won our last two games. At that point we would be 1-6 and heading for a top draft pick, so it would make sense to trade veterans for draft picks and rebuild around a younger core of players. But I think we won't do anything like that and will instead be more likely to take a veteran on than get rid of one.

Why should we flip him for low-value future consideration? Aren't there any high potential, large-sized blocking TEs available?

You think we need a blocking TE? We have Sims and Grey doing a great job at that. Jones too I believe... what we need is a Seam Threat TE. I'm not counting on Cameron even if hes healthy. We should cut him

Not sure a sixth is worth it from our end, or that anything higher would be worth it from Dallas's perspective.

You release him now and you take on $7 million dollars in dead cap charges
otherwise he's a free agent after this season

At this point it probably makes more sense to keep him unless the compensation is higher. Does Dallas have a tight end that could be a potential upgrade?

I think winning the last two games have put Miami in a position to keep players, though, rather than trade them off.
