Fisher DeBerry will resign as head football coach at Air Force on Friday after 23 seasons, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Gazette.
DeBerry, 68, will leave with three seasons remaining on his contract. His resignation had been the subject of speculation since late in the 2006 season when he would not address his future at the academy.
DeBerry departs as the winningest coach in academy history, with a record of 169-109-1. But, like legendary Air Force coach Ben Martin, he will step down with the program in a downward spiral. DeBerry had 17 winning records in his 23 seasons at the academy but his past three teams posted losing records, including his 2006 squad that finished 4-8 after losing six of its past seven games.
