I put this response in the AJ improvement threat, but thought I should let everyone know the latest on the Qb's

Here's the latest I've read on the subject:

Feeley must show that he is better than average after showing glimpses of greatness in 2004. He finished the year with a below-average 61.7 passer rating, completing 53.7 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 11 games.
Could Gus Frerotte start for the Dolphins?

Saban was also pleased with his three quarterbacks -- A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte and Sage Rosenfels -- though Frerotte has a little edge at this stage based on his knowledge of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan's system.

"All three quarterbacks have progressed nicely," Saban said. "Which one's going to start, and how are we going to make that decision . . . we're going to play the best player. Whoever plays the best. Isn't that what everybody would do? We'll do that every position, and most certainly we'll do that at this position."
On the learning curve

Right now, Gus knows the O the best, as expected, but the other 2 are progressing nicely too. AJ does have a chance to start.

after showing glimpses of greatness in 2004

Wow...I guess I would have to disagree with those words being printed in reference to A.J. Feeley, ever. And you don't need to count me as an "AJ Hater" or "AJ Lover" either. I think our offense has a chance to be pretty good this season, but I still insist that using those words in reference to AJ's performance in 2004 is just egregious.

Unless you mean he showed glimpses of greatness in the way every quarterback shows glimpses of greatness every time he completes a pass...

To me it comes off as Gus has the edge when you read everything the coaches have said about the QB situation. This would be a nice thread though to post everything the coaches have said since the tiem we signed Gus and break it all down. The one constant that I've seen is that the best player will play and that so far Gus has an edge due to his already knowing the system.

If I'm not mistaken, Gus also has a stronger arm, and I believe Linehan will prefer him not just for his already knowing the system, but because he has a strong arm and ability to complete the deep ball. AJ does have a pretty strong arm, but not as strong as Gus, and his deep accuracy is in question.

I would think that he would be improving... anything based on last year's performance would be an improvement.

That's just ignorant. He had quite a few stretches where every pass was money, every play was perfect. But then he'd throw an INT or get sacked for a loss or something. He absolutely showed signs of greatness, and if he cuts down on the bad plays he absolutely can be great.

If Steve Young can be great, ANYONE can be great.

I think if Saban was totally sold on Feeley he would not have brought in Gus Frerotte...I think Saban will start Gus and go with him the whole way, and then if we still suck, he will try to draft a QB next year (Leinart or the guy named Omar???),,,,It would be nice to see Feeley play a full year under Saban's system, but I think Saban feels that Gus has the edge, a stronger arm, and more NFL experience, so I just see Feeley backing Gus up this year.

Steve Young is a hall of fame Qb, Aj Feeley is a guy who has to compete with a career backup for the starting job. He played well in stretches, but he was not even close to great, your definition must be very different from mine though. If he had quite a few stretches than the team probably should've been better than 4-12. I think he may end up being good, but right now he's a below average QB who probably would have a difficult time starting for almost every team in the league.

Kinda made the rest hard to read. No I'm not a hater, I hope he is the guy so we don't have to chase QB's around for the next few years. Next time start of with something at least buyable by a fan.

His QB rating and win loss records are the ultimate statement for how well or bad he played. So far he hasn't done enough to stay a starting NFL QB. He better get lots better or he wont be anywhere close to starting in the NFL.

Your stance that CK is ignorant in his view based on the argument you take makes you look uninformed. Most people don't think Feeley is anywhere close to HOFer Steve Young as a player. You gave CK a very abrasive response.

in his first couple of years no one thought Steve Young was a HOFer.

Sometimes ppl forget how Young and Farve started off..they only know the best of the QB's after they've struggled.

How old was Steve Young in his first few years? How old IS Feeley now?
Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I was under the impression that Young wasnt 26-27 years old when he started out in his "first few years".

I dont trust anything Saban says, and I mean that in the best way possible. Maybe he is saying that Gus has the advantage mainly because of his knowledge of the system, so Feeley will really put his heart in to learning the playbook. Unless Sban thinks we can honestly win right now, then I see no point in playing Ferotte. I want one of the younger guys if that is the case.
