The current situation involving C Alex Mack signing an offer sheet with the Jaguars will have an impact on contract negotiations between the Dolphins and C Mike Pouncey. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported last night that Mack is expected to receive close to $9 million annually in his next contract.

Salguero expects Pouncey and his agent to pay close attention to this contract, even if they ultimately fall short of Mack’s average salary. Pouncey could still target $7 or $8 million per year in his next contract if Mack’s contract is used as the ceiling in negotiations.

Salguero previously reported that the Dolphins will exercise Pouncey’s fifth-year option next month, so he’ll be under team control for the next two years.
Pouncey, 24, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is set to make $1.63 million for the 2014 season. Salguero believes he has clearly outplayed his rookie deal and is in position for a sizable raise.

Last year, Pro Football Focus rated Pouncey as the No. 13 center in the league and a particularly solid pass-protector.

I hope they do not sign Pouncey to a future contract. Comes off as a ticking time bomb to me. Reason being: he's just involved in way too much drama in his 3 seasons on the team. Letting him walk after this season might be to soon, but after the 5th year option we should have a replacement in the wings ready to go. Then he just leaves and contributed to potential compensatory pick(s).

Not a big pouncry fan. He's above average and hangs out with bad people. Not worth more than 3-4 million. If he can't be reasonable let someone else overpay him.

Mike Pouncey worth 3m? Hilarious joke

Yes, my fault. I was looking at a website that only gave base salaries. I think Kelce's 6 mil/year deal is a lot more in line with what Pouncey should get, but really that needs to be the higher end of the range. Pouncey isn't better than Kelce and he does have a high risk personality. If he ends up averaging 8.5 per year like Mack, that would be a very big mistake in my opinion.

$8.5 is fine. Everyone needs to relax.

Previous rumors had it around $10-11 that would of been crazy.

You mean the guy who told the defense he was gonna snap the ball by looking backwards??? No, not him, not for that much!

well if he wants to follow mack's contract that means he doesn't get an extension for two more tears so Im all down for that

Considering by the time 2016 rolls around the salary cap will be astronomical, so 8-9m a year will be NO problem.

I expected to be one of the only ones thinking Pouncey is not worth that much money. I guess you guys aren't that dumb after all. I would say he is a slightly above average player that has a very suspect personality. If we had to resign him this year I would not want to pay more than 6 or 7 mil.

We need to draft a center/guard in this draft to hedge our bets for Pouncey asking for an unreasonable amount of money and likely leaving the team because we will not pay him.
The Alex Mack situation put dollar signs in his eyes and he will likely have a great season to get that fat payday. After getting paid, he strikes me as the type that will slack off.
Draft a center this year. The player can play back up guard and we will save more money for play makers going forward.
Tyler Larsen fits the bill and would be a great value for our need in the 5th round.

I think you have to consider a few things. First, is Pouncey getting any better at his job or has he reached his apex. If this is as good as he gets that's fine, and is certainly valuable. If he's getting better at things like run blocking or not tipping the snap count then I'd pay more. Second, who would be his replacement if he were deemed to spendy. Right now it's a complete unknown. Did Miami keep Garner, who is alright but not a pro bowler? Do they draft a versatile lineman who can do a few things and maybe step in a C, let's say Richman Westberg for example? What other FA centers come up the same time that could be signed?

It's interesting to me how many folks think this is a cut and dry situation, for either side of the fence. Everything is fluid all the time and Hickey (provided he's still the GM) will have to take a look at a lot of different options.
