Alex Smith willing to be Niners’ backup plan to Peyton Manning

Not sad at all about not getting Smith, but it is getting pathetic when even the marginal QB's won't have anything to do with us now.

I knew this was going to happen. Ireland should have better vision and saw this coming and stayed clear of that guy. He obviously doesn't think any of this is making him or the team look bad. I'm glad Alex changed his mind if this is true. He is not better the Moore. Nor is Flynn. I can see why they went after Manning. But so what he chose not to play for them. He's only got a couple of years to play if that.
They really made a mess of this by saying before free agency started that they were looking for a franchise QB. Why not say we are looking for the best players for our team no matter what position. Everyone from the owner on down is to blame for not knowing how to speak to you guys and the media. Too many drama queens on the site also.

@JasonColeYahoo: Only way Dolphins get Alex Smith is if Manning goes to SF. Even if Fins pay more, Smith wants to be on Calif. #49ers
....so your telling me we couldnt sign a former back-up QB and now we can't even sign a QB who doesnt mind being a back-up plan for another franchise?

Im done for the night.....

It seriously may be time to build the team through the draft and apparently only the draft.

Best news I've heard all day.

How does Ross not fire Ireland after the inept actions this offseason in the supposed promise to get us a franchise QB?

The fans on the San Fran forums are already saying, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out," to Smith. They are wanting to start Colin Kaepernick if Smith and Manning aren't an option. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.

If he was ready to be their back up plan, then why did he even visit? Sounds like more speculation to me. If this was his attitude, then he has absolutely no motivational reason to meet with anyone. With that attitude he's totally safe. I think it's a crap report.

Wow. This is officially rock bottom. The only way this could get worse is if Tim Tebow refused a trade to the Dolphins...
sorry i have to disagree. IMO rock bottom would be if we some how end up with Tim Teblow.

So let me get this straight? Steven Ross said his priority was to get a Franshise QB to Miami and Ireland has struck out completely. No Manning, No Flynn, No Smith, no nothing. Short of RG III and Luck, there is no one in this draft that will be anything but an average if that NFL QB. How pathetic!

Who is Steven Ross? He's now more appropriately referred to as Stephen Loss!

just let moore be the man he lay well wonce he got on the same page, get a wr in the draft roll the dice with what we got, draft and build forget these bums, overpaying for a qb who is chit.........lol.....almost ready to give up on this franchise........just a complete and utter joke

Almost all of Green Bay's roster was built through drafting. Nearly all of their star players have been their own draft choices.

Guys come on.. you all need to relax.. If plan D fails.. (Garrard) I'm sure plan E will be to use all of our draft picks this year on nothing but QB's. We'll have a real good chance at a franchise quarterback then.. Come on Ireland!! Make it happen!! Think positive guys.. If we draft a bunch of QB's, one of them is bound to sign with us. Everything is under control, and this is all part of the master plan I'm sure.. :ponder:

Championship!!!
