All signs point to Reggie being the Main Back. Can he carry the workload?
All signs point to Reggie being the main back here in 2011, but he has missed 16 games of his last 42 games because of leg and knee injuries.
Sparano on Reggie's role:
"I think he can be a featured back,” “I have a strong belief this guy can carry the ball on first and second down. There’s no question he has to have a caddie. We know that. That’s why Daniel Thomas is here.” Sparano also said Bush “adds a dimension of speed we didn’t have. He’s a dynamic player. This is a player who can help you become multiple and be less predictable. He had a lot of carries in college. Putting him out on first and second downs is important.”
Reggie on being he main back:
"That's an opportunity I've wanted and envisioned I think (for) as long as I've played football," Bush said on Friday at the Dolphins training facility. "You know, I've always wanted to be a featured back and the main guy and I feel like there's an opportunity here for that."
Sparano also seems to want to keep him fresh by limiting his punt returns to situational times. (Insert Bess as our tentative punt returner)
Reggie Bush averaged 5.0, and 4.5 carries per game the last 2 seasons, and in the 60 games he played in during his career, he only averaged 10.2 touches per game. I am expecting Sparano to use Reggie Bush for at least 12-15 runs out of the backfield, and 5+ receptions out of various formations. This adds up to 272 -320 touches for the season at the minimum. This wold surpass his rookie totals, and that was before his multiple injuries.
Reggie thinks he can do it, "Obviously, we've had a long off-season," he said. "So I've had plenty of time to heal up. And you know, physically I'm good. I'm prepared."
Only time will tell. I for one, am hoping he can.
