I think Allen will make it. I don't know about Hagan. I think they will both get every opportunity to prove they are good enough to start for this team.

We could afford to lose Hagan. Our depth at WR isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. At the very least, there are some unprovens that will push Hagan for that roster spot. Allen too, for that matter.

I would like to see them both make it. Heck, I just wanna watch Hagan catch the dang ball several times in a row.

Jason Allen has already proven to me that he can be a very productive safety in this league, and you can count on him being on this team. Hagan will make this team mainly just because there aren't very many wide receivers on this team. However, I think Hagan will have to prove this year that he can be a threat through the air if he wants to stay a Miami Dolphin for more than just this season.

The question on Jason Allen all along has been his size. He is too heavy. Mel Kiper seems to project these 210, 220 pounders at corner, when 190 is the ideal weight.

Free Safety is a lot like a slow-corner... you don't have to do a lot of play against the run... but you better be good in coverage. That's where Allen played last year.

Strong Safety is generally where you put your fat safeties or small linebackers... the 210-220 pound guys. If they have to make too many tackles in the running game, then you have some potential for getting these guys injured (see Bob Sanders and Yeremiah Bell).

Jason Allen is in this weight class... his natural position at his weight is strong-safety. My recommendation to him his to lose some weight... to around 195-200 pounds and play free safety. If he shows up at 215-220 pounds, I predict he'll be cut this year.

I don't blame either for their production values. Hagan has had the following quarterbacks in two years: Culpepper, Harrington, Lemon, Green, Beck. I still have hopes for him to become a valuable slot guy.

I think Jason Allen has done good, in spite of whats happened to him. He has had more position changes than I can count. He also seemed to come out at the end of last season.

jason allen is a playmaker (one of the few we had on D last season). it seems like it was all mental with him. once he could take the field and rely on his talent and physical ability, he could shine. let's hope this season and the rest of his career is a continuation of that ascension. we need him.

i can't see derek hagan in the slot. too tall and rangy and not nifty enough. but him coming in as an outside receiver in a 3 or 4 wide receiver set, he could definitely contribute if he can become more consistent. unless he has a breakout year at some point i can see him being the type of player they are always trying to replace, but may be productive every time he's inserted into the game.

I really hope these guys can produce but i think david martin and matt roth need to step up as well.

I agree with you, we have seen little from Hagan. Allen could be productive but he may also be a bust. Hagan is a huge disappointment though because he has the talent. Allen hasn't played consistently.

Do you know what he runs at his weight ???? This is why he is a specimen and was drafted 16th..... He's an all-around DB... What did you see from him that makes you think he's too heavy at FS ?? Do you know what most the top Free Safety's weigh in the NFL ?

Time for these guys to step up, or say goodbye. Both these positions are 3yr positions before they should start to shine or prove there nothing special. I have high hopes for Jason Allen, but not so much for Hagan, although I would love to see him step it up and make some plays. Thoughts?

Rest of the draft from 06:

(114) Joe Toledo T Washington (212) Fred Evans DT Texas State (226) Rodrique Wright DT Texas (233) Devin Aromashodu WR Auburn

Rod Wright has shown good things so I think he will be more productive this year. But as far as Hagan and Allen, Allen really stepped up his game toward the bottom half of the season. He made great plays and showed his ability to tackle. He really proved me wrong by his play. Hagan has the potential and has shown good things, but to me the QB inconsistency has hurt him. This year I think we will see Hagan step it up along with Ginn.

I wonder if it would make sense in the 3 wide format to put Ginn in the slot with Hagan and Wilford wide? I guess it would diminish Ginn's deep speed some since that's not usually what you run from the slot.

The reason weight matters is not because of how fast he can run on the first play or the second play. (my memory is a 4.38 on Allen). If he were a little lighter, maybe he'd run a 4.30.

When you run 20-yards for 6 consecutive plays, that's when you slow down and weight becomes a factor.

He is competing against Renaldo Hill who weighs 190 ( a little light for a free safety). If you would like to mention some top free safeties and their weights, I would be interested in reading it.

I've always felt Allen was talented, but he's been moved around so much that it's hard to excel when you're not even sure where you're going to be. It looks like that's finally going to change.

As for Hagan, he's the biggest head scratcher on the team. I mean, this is a guy who caught over 95% of the balls thrown his way in college...but now can't even catch a cold. Seriously, wtf happened?? I understand we've had bad QB play, but most of those passes were very catchable. Let's hope he gets it together.
