Jason Allen was a first-round pick gone wrong who had switched from corner to safety and back again and had fallen so far that he couldn’t even make the starting lineup in an already godawful Miami secondary. Tyrone Culver was a late-round pick who was bounced from Green Bay and then released by the Dolphins before they re-signed him for special teams depth.

Both were considered liabilities in coverage, little more than stopgaps until Bill Parcells and company could retool the defensive backfield in the offseason. However, after just two games, in which the beleaguered secondary has done an abrupt about-face, it’s become apparent that Culver and Allen might be a bit more than just a couple of also-rans.

Give it a quick read and leave me a comment or two on the article if you enjoyed it. Thanks!

another good quick article HG

Great article.. Lets see if they can secure the ball in against one of the worst pass teams in the nfl. We should have 2-3 interceptions against seneca wallace this week. They are playing scrubs! Yeremiah is going to get his first int.

i've pretty much kissed this thought good-bye. i really don't know what else has to happen until Bell finally holds on to the ball. fortunately, Culver seems to have hands like glue.

Culver impressed me a couple of weeks ago, I've been watching him and he has pretty good cover skills as well as great ball skills.

Jason Allen is a guy we need to continue to play well. He can help us out in the matchup game against big WR's and speed guys.

Great article as always from Hugo. I'm really starting to be impressed with Culver. He could be a diamond in the rough at FS for us. And that would be awesome considering we have a need at FS. I can see him possibly getting the nod to start next year. Jason Allen too has been impressive and could find himself in the #2 corner spot very soon. Very similar to Asomugha, but can he turn out to be as good? We shall see.

Interesting points regarding the future starting status of these two guys.

Culver really impressed me in the Denver game. I'm anxious too see how he builds on that performance over the second half of the season.

Dont read too much into allens ints they were pretty much him being in the right place at the wrong/right time, depending on the pov. but he has been playing awesome, shadowing very good receivers such as marshal, evans and royal. culver has also been very good in coverage. this is still a need but i love how this opens up different defensive packages because we are now that much deeper in our rotation having these guys.

Interesting insights, but I would point out a few things about Allen's INTs:
1) The one he made against the Broncos was actually Sam Madisonesque (he left his guy to move into space)
2) After seeing our guys drop easy interceptions even when they're in the "right place", it's nice to know that we have someone that consistently converts those easy INTs

culver could provide some nice depth at the position, but the safety position opposite bell needs an upgrade for the future, would love to see a bif young stud back there next year

I have no problem with looking for an upgrade at free safety, but that said, if Culver earns it, I have no problem with giving him a shot at the starting role.

If Jason Allen becomes the starter and we resign Will Allen, CB IMO no longer becomes a priority in the next draft. U keep Goodman and Lehan and even Jones . . . u are good at CB. Safety is very much a priority regardless if you keep Bell and Hill . . . who I think both are free Agents . . . . Culver stepping up would be huge, but u need to draft another.

Agree. Bell and Hill are both 30+ and if JA improves enough to be a starter then that becomes my focus in the draft in the secondary.

Culver is a nice surprise. Jason Allen looks better than Lehan... he seems good enough to be a Nickel Corner in this league... and cover a teams #3 Wide Receiver. If he gets some playing time... maybe one day he'll be able to cover a #2 WR. Maybe.
