I believe this is one of the more overlooked aspects of free agency. Where people simply want a name rather than someone who fits the style of our offense or defense.

So I wanted to know from anybody who has broken down tape or knows Alonso and Maxwell styles. Did the Eagles simply use them incorrectly? And do you think we offer a better opportunity for them to play their preferred style or scheme?

I know we now have a defensive coordinator that is a defensive back guru and hopefully will maximize Maxwell's ability but I do not know if our scheme is a fit for Alonso.

Hopefully this being the second year off of the injury alonso can round back into form but I understand that is a big if.

Any thoughts or opinions?

i keep hearing all this maxwells great in zone but to be able to play a lot of zone you need to be able to get teams way behind the sticks and rush with the front 4 and get home...something seattle was obviously able to do on d when he was there...better stop the run...something Miami wasn't able to do in 2015

Philly tried to play a lot of press man and that is not Maxwells strong point. He played zone "cover 3 in Seattle.

if vance joseph advocated going out and getting Byron Maxwell (and I don't know if he did, but I sure hope he did), I would take that as "he was misused in the eagle's scheme and did not play well, and we will be implementing a system where we feel he will play exceptionally well."

The Eagles have had a lot of issues with free agent CBs but CB is an interesting position. I've seen top guys flop and I've seen us get great production out of Andre Goodman, Will Allen, and Nate Jones. It's all about fit with the staff.

Kiko was NOT a fit in the Billy Davis team as he is an undersized Mike being asked to be a 34 D. But the Eagles are going all in on getting rid of every player that Chip brought in last year minus Bradford.

VJ's defense will be an attacking one gap 4-3 Over, which is modeled after Jim Schwartz's. He uses the Cover 2 shell as coverage and also to disguise Cover 4 & 6 shells as well with a mix of zone & man. He does also call Cover 3 shells for a change up look. VJ calls about 50/50 press coverage but not the physical jams you see from such teams as Seattle; rather CB's are 2-3 yards off LOS.

Concerning Maxwell, he played well in Seattle by being physical and jamming WR's at the LOS with All Pro FS Earl Thomas to clean up for him over the top in their Cover 3 man. When VJ does call press the CB's will line up 2-3 off the LOS and we dont have any range at FS for the moment.

As for Alonso, the '13 version is certainly a stud in our scheme, but he is no longer that player. Of course the mental processing is still there, especially vs the run, but he is physically limited now in his abilities to make the play on time.

Of note, Alonso missed 5 games (3-7) with knee issues and Maxwell missed the last 3 (14-16) with a shoulder injury.

Seattle's coverages are often mistaken for zone, but they are not. Essentially it's somewhat a combination of both as it starts with zone principles but it ends with man 2 man in what's called "pattern-match". The defensive backfield will play zone within the first 5-7 yards and after receivers declare their routes/intentions the defenders will then pick their assignments and man up.

VJ uses this concept at times in Two Trap coverage, where the CB will jump any out route run by the #2 WR (counting from the sideline inward) but not across the board. Also in the past he hasn't played the typical jam at the LOS where Maxwell did well in Seattle.

Regarding Alonso & the LB Corps.... 1) He is the Sam backer & Misi the Mike who comes off in nickle packages or 2) Misi is the Sam who comes out & Kiko slides over from Mike

Hewitt & Vigil remaining the backups which IMO is an upgrade.

p.s. Jenkins remains at Will

I see some similarity between what Wade P (w/ Denver) & Seattle does. 3 down lineman & a DE/OLB hybrid i.e. Von Miller.

Philly are moving to a wide 9 4-3 scheme. A lot of posters on Philly forums saying they think Kiko would be a poor fit in a wide 9. Nobody has really elaborated on why not. You might expect him having to shed blockers more often if the DTs are lined up at 3 and 2 tech shading inside. More the role for a big thumper with a big gap responsibility. Probably not Kikos forte. But he's no lightweight either. Loves to put his head in where sane humans wouldn't. We'll see.

Maxwell was def not used well last year, and the defense had plenty of issues with play calling and scheme. There maybe some upside with Maxwell, especially in a zone scheme. He was very soft against the run and his tackling was awful. He was a disappointment in philly but still has some upside and could turn into a decent #2 corner

Kiko was recovering from injury and was injured again this season. young, talent player but might never put it together. Doesn't cost much this year so low risk type of addition
