DAVIE — Arian Foster spent the first two days of training camp on the physically unable to perform list.
But that two-day absence represents just a small part of the running back’s nine-month rehab process. Foster, who will be 30 in August, is coming off an Achilles’ tendon tear that he suffered against the Dolphins on October 25.
After being activated from the PUP list, Foster tested the strength of his Achilles in practice Sunday for the first time since going down with the injury.
“I was anxious,” Foster said.
Despite the anxiety, Foster survived his first practice with the Dolphins. With his first practice out of the way, the four-time Pro Bowler will now
focus on competing with second-year back Jay Ajayi for the starting job.
“It felt good to just be back out here again — to get my feet wet, grinding with the fellas (and) enjoying football again,” Foster said.
Foster signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins as a free agent on July 18. The one-year contract is worth $1.5 million and includes incentives that could bring it up to a max value of $3.5 million.
It’s a low-risk, high-reward signing for Miami. Foster is the only current Dolphins running back with more than three NFL starts under his belt, and he has run for 6,472 yards and 54 touchdowns in 76 games over his seven-year NFL career.
The question is, can Foster stay healthy and return to form?
