Guys I have to admit something...
Before the season started and we had acquired Culpepper, I didn't think that he was that great of a QB.
Like many others, I assumed that Randy Moss was the man that made Culpeper who he was. Boy was I wrong...
Take from the game what you will, but this is what I saw...
I saw a QB who made some exceptional reads. While you guys were looking for down the field reads, I feel I was looking at the reads that were more important in this type of game, the ones he had to make with regards to the blitz. I saw a quaterback who effectively beat in your face blitzes where two or three defenders came at him so cleanely, I would have thought that it was a designed screen pass gone bad. This was done effectively for about three quarters. The man was uncanny at doing something that I have seen few quaterbacks do. He didn't just get rid of the ball when defenders came clean, he made them pay for it be getting the open reciever with some Fantastic, acurate throws while they were coming from the line of scrimage. You have to realize that these passes were not simply being thrown wildly to Half Backs while in desperation, they were quick tight perfect spirals that were thrown on the money by in my opinion, from what looked like a cool headed quarterback. The best part: the recievers did not have to break stride, therefore allowing some good yards after the catch. When I saw the defenders come free the first time, I thought it was a sack for sure, but then I found my self stunned and going no way does he do that again, that had to be luck, no way. But he did it again and again. Even thought we weren't moving the ball down the field on pitsburgh Defense, I had a smile on my face that I haven't had since the days of Danny and his quick release. And if you still don't see what I am trying to get accross, look at it this way. If it was Gus Ferrot, Jay Fiedler, or AJ Feeley in the pocket, they would have either been sacked at least 3-4 times that I counted in the first two quarters alone, or you would have seen some passes launched into the sidelines to avoid the sacks. How many sack saving throw away passes did you see thrown into the side lines??? But yet the stat still remains true: only one sack taken. Now that my friends, is Golden... And if you think this was all because of outstanding pass protection from our O-line then....
I saw a quarterback who had so much control over his passes that he could seemingly make the ball do what he wanted it to do even in mid air. I hope that I am not the only one who saw that throw to Welker where he pumped the ball so hard that I thought this dude was going to riffle it down field, but then out of nowhere the ball seemed to shift momentumn and then softly levitate out of his hand over a couple of defenders, right into the recievers hands in stride. Again, it was like watching the Matrix, that pass was so soft, so pretty, and so well timed that It made it seemed that the rest of the football field had stopped moving and all I could do was focus on it. If you guys can't tell, I am excited here. If that's not enough, did you see the pass that champers dropped in the endzone??? Laser fast, on the money, and only chambers could have made a play on it but yet it was perfect. I watched that replay multiple times, I could not believe how fast that ball got to it's destination, but yet how catcheable it was. Super Freaky...
I saw a quaterback who broke containment (scrambled out of the pocket) and hit marty booker for a 50 yarder while on the run. Now the distance of the play was not as important as what the play really meant to me. I had seen Mcnab do it in Philly and C-pep while in Minny, he bought enough time while scrambling to allow the reciever to get open and then made the perfect pass to him while on the run. No matter how good it is, pass defense could only hold up for so long, sooner or later there will be day light and when there is, it's generaly gapping holes like the one Marty found. Now we have seen Ferrot, Fiedler, and Feeley scramble but how many times did it end with those type of results?? More of those to come fellas... I could not be happier.
I also saw a quarter back who demonstrated great command and was able to get us down the field and into a First and Goal situation and still have 45 seconds on the clock. No timouts were used, and to top of, it all started with under two minutes til intermission to begin with. Again he was calm, cool, and collected through out the whole thing. Does this remind you of some special quarterbacks???
To finish with, I saw a qurterback out there that could have easily had close to a 400 yard performance against a Defense that was pretty much gunning for him the whole night. Say what you will, but not all defenses will be able to erase Ronnie Brown for a whole game. Most teams will have a tough day when facing this QB when he is armed with a running game. Another way to look at is that the Pittsburg Defense literally shut down Ronnie, Mcmicheal, Chambers and even booker (out of the game for a portion) and the Quarterback still got close to 300 hundred yards. And I Don't believe that they got their interceptions until we got desperate. To me, that says alot about the quarter back. As someone else pointed out in another thread there were alot of dropped, perfectly thrown passes out there today. I am salivating just thinking what he does when the offense is in full swing.
While some of you guys will sit on the fact that he launched some of the passes into the ground, I will take them for what they seemed to be to me: Rust. I am sorry fellas but I fully expected to see more of those than he actually threw. Think of it this way, I was so stoked and nervouse about this game that I almost couldn't eat today. This man had to play in it could you imagine how he must of felt? Then you add on top of that the fact that the man hasn't played a full football game in almost a year and you expect him to be perfect when the situation arises? Given the same circumstances do you think Marino or Elway would not have one or two sputter balls? If you don't think so then that's fine, but I choose to stay on the planet earth and know that no one is perfect especially under these circumstances... I guess this thread is for those that simply want to judge the man by what he did wrong and in the fourth quarter when we were desperate. You guys only choose to talk about bad so I will have done the polar opposite and only talked about the good.
