This Sunday will be special for wide receiver Rishard Matthews. Special because his brother’s family will be at Sun Life Stadium and special because his brother will be honored as part of the Dolphins’ season-long program to salute unsung heroes.
Matthews only wishes his brother could be there.
About seven weeks ago, on Oct. 2, Christopher Ruiz, a former Marine working as a private defense contractor in Afghanistan, died when his transport plane crashed. All 11 on board, including six service members, were lost in the crash.
Ruiz was Matthews’ half brother, his older brother. They had been family since Matthews was 5-years-old. Ruiz served in the Marines for 10 years. He was supposed to come home from Afghanistan to his wife and three young children just three weeks after the accident.
The loss hit Matthews hard. Even now, as he stands by his locker Wednesday afternoon at the Dolphins’ training facility, the words come out slowly. There is pain in his eyes as he talks and an abundance of love in his heart.
