OK. So flash back to last year, just before the draft. Saban's choice for quarterback was Gus Frerotte. Nobody in their right mind thought Frerotte would be a championship quarterback; at best he might make the playoffs with a ton of talent around him. A.J. Feeley, on the other hand, was still unproven and hadn't played in 5 years with any sort of talent. Feeley MAY have been far more successful than Frerotte; we'll never know. Most sensible people said that with Frerotte, you knew what you were getting. Well, this is exactly what we got. In my view, Saban basically treated 2005 like a pot luck season.
(Aside: The Miami Dolphins were not a perennial bottom dweller. Their last losing season was in 1988, at 6-10. 2004 was an off year, due to the completely shuffled offensive line, injuries, and most importantly the completely ineffective running game thanks to the departure of Ricky Williams. This team had in 2005 (and still mostly has now) the same solid core of players that made them successful over the last 10 years. Surtain left, and the pass defense suffered due to the departure as well as the injury to Poole.)
What happens if, in 2006, Culpepper misses six games because he isn't ready? What happens if Culpepper gets injured again? If we're stuck with Tommy Maddox for six games, we'll have a very difficult time making the playoffs. What then? Do we give a free pass to a coach who gambled twice - and lost - for two seasons?
