OK. So flash back to last year, just before the draft. Saban's choice for quarterback was Gus Frerotte. Nobody in their right mind thought Frerotte would be a championship quarterback; at best he might make the playoffs with a ton of talent around him. A.J. Feeley, on the other hand, was still unproven and hadn't played in 5 years with any sort of talent. Feeley MAY have been far more successful than Frerotte; we'll never know. Most sensible people said that with Frerotte, you knew what you were getting. Well, this is exactly what we got. In my view, Saban basically treated 2005 like a pot luck season.

(Aside: The Miami Dolphins were not a perennial bottom dweller. Their last losing season was in 1988, at 6-10. 2004 was an off year, due to the completely shuffled offensive line, injuries, and most importantly the completely ineffective running game thanks to the departure of Ricky Williams. This team had in 2005 (and still mostly has now) the same solid core of players that made them successful over the last 10 years. Surtain left, and the pass defense suffered due to the departure as well as the injury to Poole.)

What happens if, in 2006, Culpepper misses six games because he isn't ready? What happens if Culpepper gets injured again? If we're stuck with Tommy Maddox for six games, we'll have a very difficult time making the playoffs. What then? Do we give a free pass to a coach who gambled twice - and lost - for two seasons?

What if when I'm walking to class in five minutes a Tyrannasaurus Rex comes from behind a tree and eats me?

What if I spontaniously burst into flames?

What is the point of this thread?

Did I just fart?

RAAAARRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!:D

I don't think Feeley would have been better then Gus. The reason is because Feeley sucks. He is horribly bad and was another huge mistake by Wanny who also sucks. Also, Saban is an incredible judge of talent, and I honestly can not doubt Nick's judgement. He is one of the few coaches in the world where I really have complete faith in his decions.

Gus, is an excellent backup QB, but not a starter. If Daunte gets hurt then like most NFL teams, we are in a bit of trouble. I think Kerry Collins would be a very good backup or maybe Harrington if he is cheap. If we have one of those guys, or Lemon steps up, then we will be fine (ala Jax with a poor man's Gerrard).

What would a toilet look like if your knees bent the other way?

What if Ricky just quick 2 weeks before the start of the season?

Oh sorry, that happened already.

Ask Willis McGahee.

I don't think Saban lost with AJ. He watched AJ in practices and games and determined that he was the third best QB on the roster. It was the same assessment I had made earlier, that AJ had almost zero chance to be a franchise QB. IMO Saban did the best he could with what was available. The decision wasn't between a known and an unknown but rather between two knowns. Gus was a guy who at best might get you to the playoffs and AJ was a guy who wouldn't get you anywhere.

Fiedler was also awful in 2004. I don't know how bad Feeley would have been, since he did well in Philadelphia. It looked last year like whoever was under center was going to get hammered (and they did). It's quite possible that Feeley would've been worse, but we really don't know. I thought the 2004 team was the absolute worst way to judge talent, or at least close to it.

Saban does frequently seem to be a good judge of talent (sans Frerotte). Stockar McDougle was bad, but he didn't play much. No real harm done. Saban drafted well. Most of the free agents turned out quite well. Don't get me wrong, the guy has made a ton of good decisions and drafted pretty well. Frerotte was a big risk and it didn't pay off. Culpepper is a risk - but because of healthy. I would be upset (and most people would) if we had to wait till 2007 to make a run. A healthy Culpepper would make anybody fear the Dolphins with the rest of the team the way they are. But if the gamble fails slightly and we're forced to go with somebody like Harrington or Maddox, it'll be painful.

Basically, I just really hope if we're forced to go with a backup, it's somebody other than Harrington or Maddox.

I remember disagreeing with you on this in the past. Halfway through the season, I wanted Sage, because we knew Gus wasn't the answer. Sage MIGHT be. Feeley MIGHT be. Feeley was more of a known than Sage, but still pretty unknown.

1) We don't have Tommy Maddux

2) Is the glass always half empty with you?

3) Are you a Wanstadt fan?

last season was 9-7 and while we did not make the playoffs that is STILL a winning season. and coming back from 4-12 that "gamble" paid off
