"Saban is balancing the benching of an ineffective quarterback against the installation of an unproven player who might succeed but might fail to an even higher degree."

The statement says, Saban knows that Gus is being ineffective, but still not willing to take the chance on benching him.

I think what Saban is really trying to say is ...

Even though Gus is playing very badly ... we are only one game out of first place in the division. Granted Sage might come in and light things up but, if he comes in and completely costs us a game then it might destroy any chance we have of the division crown if things start coming together in the second half of the season.
I mean remember that this is the first year that these guys have worked together in this system... and being one game out of first in the division at the halfway mark of the season is not enough to warrant a change in our starting QB regardless of how he is playing.

If we get to a point (After this week possibly) where we are a couple of games behind the division leader and looking like we are heading for a slide then he will be willing to make the change before the season is out of reach in hopes the change will be enough to spark a run at the end of the year to win the division.

******
Granted I am still all for benching Gus now no matter how reasonable it sounds to keep him playing.

If you are in favor of benching Gus, then why even bother? Your entire post is why he IS starting.. and why Sage IS NOT starting.

I am just saying what I think is running through Saban's mind as a coach of the team.

That has no bearing on how I, as a passionate fan, feels :D, but can at least see why he is doing it.

Here's my opinion:

We're fans. As important as we are to the integral enthusiasm and support of this team, we know absolutely nothing about what is going on in training and practices. For all we know, Sage may go out there and throw five straight picks to REGGIE HOWARD.

Nick Saban is the COACH. He knows what's going on, who the players respond to, who is the most effective. He's not going to pick the guy that he feels will give us the best chance at LOSING, so obvious he sees Gus as the best option.

This isn't Madden.

I agree but Saban himself said that he isnt in favor of making a change even though the change might bring in a QB who could be an improvement, granted he said he might play worse. It just isnt worth the risk yet to make the change.

P.S.
I dont play Madden :D

Hey, you could be on to something...maybe this explains why Reggie is starting....he must look good in practice. :rofl3:
