Merling is a restricted free agent this offseason who will most assuredly get tendered original pick.

He will be easy and cheap to retain, or; should he be traded?

How about asking him to drop weight and take snaps as a 4-3 end?

Anyone see him as a DT/3-technique?

What do you think?

I think we should get him cheap and keep him, and then draft Quentin Coples and have Starks play NT in the 4-3. Let Langford and Soliai go.

Just keep him. A trade market is probably non-existent and the best we could get probably would be a 7th round pick. Keep him for one more year and see what happens.

He will be a rotational guy. I hated when we picked him cause he was coming of hernia surgery and was gaining weight. He has been a complete bust and I wouldn't care a bit if we cut him or let him.

Id keep him along.  He actually was decent last year considering he played very little.  He looked like a fat wasted whale that set the edge but at least it was kind of set.  Plus he got his hand up to bat a couple of balls.  The fins never seem to bat balls even though the most pedestrian players can do it.  In some cases it is just as good as a sack (3rd down).  Id keep fat merling around

can't afford to keep soliai langford starks odrick mcdaniel and merling.

odrick and starks earned their spots. you need another guy as insurance incase of injury or incase odrick regresses. i would pick soliai in that case. he's dominant. but will he take a 5-6 mill a year deal? langford is a good player and has done plenty for us but i just dont think he's a game changer. and i also think he's too situation. mcdaniel is a great guy but not at 3 million dollars a year. merling has done nothing imo as of late to earn a spot.

i don't want to create more holes but i would be okay rolling with starks soliai odrick and letting the rest walk. unless people want to take paycuts. no more investing all our money in defensive tackles. time to put that money towards QB and PASS RUSHERS

I think we wasted his potential when we converted him to end. I think we should have him lose weight and go from there.

This was probably always his best chance to succeed in the NFL, and given we don't have someone to play LDE on the roster I'd be all for giving him a (very) modest two year deal to see what he can do at the position he played at Clemson (at, say, 275 pounds).

Though, of course, you only view this as a fallback option. This is a guy who's faced multiple injuries, has off the field issues and, oh by the way, hasn't done **** when he has been on the field. If you're going to play a 4-3 you still need to address the position with a Kroy Biermann type.

just dont think you get better letting pro bowlers go, got to keep paul

He is a big guy who is pretty nimble. I think nt would be a fit or three tech

Due to the shortage of 4-3 DE's on the roster, especially with Allama-Francis being so lousy, and Jason Trusnik more suited to play LB, just like Koa Misi; I would prefer to see Merling drop to his college playing weight and become a backup at DE
