Andy Cohen: Defense Could Be Special

The Dolphins have a lot of the ingredients in place to have an excellent defense in 2007, but only if the right things begin happening this summer. Dolphin Digest editor Andy Cohen takes a look at the challenges facing this defense.

I think Andy Cohen is very accurate in his assessments.

What do you think?

I think Andy Cohen always writes the most optimistic articles that get your hopes up.

Cohen is a homer...and I love it! Gimme the rose colored glasses and the kool-aid. I'm buying in!

Our front 7 is very fierce. The key person in that front seven is Matt Roth. Can he bring it consistently, allowing teams to not double JT . . . if he can be like Adawale on that side, then this defense will be amazing. The other key person up front is Joey Porter . . . he needs to show that he is a big upgrade over Spragan, if he does . . . then this defense indeed could be special.

The front seven is fantastic, with starters and depth IMO . . . so everybody's concern definitely should be on the secondary and Jason Allen. He is the most important player in this upcomming TC. He needs to be a impact player back there, his physicals are dynamic, lets hope his football instincts allow him to be a playmaker for us back there. The fact that all these guys are back . . . Will Allen, Jason Allen, Goodman, Daniels, Bell, Tillman and Hill . . . that can only be a plus. I honestly feel the secondary will be much improved this season.

This defense definitely can be special, this team can be special . . . we just need the right pieces to fall in the right places.

JT
Holliday, Vickerson
Traylor, Solai
Roth, Wright

Crowder, Gbaja-Biamilla
Zach, Pope
Porter, Spragan

Will Allen, Travis Daniels, Jason Allen, Goodman, Mitchell
Bell, Hill, Tillman, Worrell

2 more spots to be won on the DLine (Evans would have been one and Manny Wright the other), but that is a solid foundation right there. Next draft will be OLB, DE and DB as the primary focus on defense, but its pretty set for this season.

I don't know how you concluded that from reading his article. He sounds cautiously optimistic. What's rose colored about that? The defense was one of the tops in the NFL last yr.

There have been some writers, supposed exprts, and rival fans that have said we will not have as good a D-line this year because of age (Taylor, Holliday, Traylor), or inexperience (Vickerson, Solai, Roth, Wright).

I on the other hand (imo), think this could be the best D-line we have had in a long time (Maybe ever). JT is still a force (DPOY), Traylor is still a force against the run (Does take up alooot of space), and Holliday had one of this best seasons last year. Add to that Roth in limited time looked as good as starter Carter last year, Vickerson has shown to be a quality backup, and Solai seems to be the type of player we will be able to stick in Traylors spot and lose nothing, in anything, maybe gain something.

As for Wright, from the moment we got this guy, I have been foaming at the mouth, this guy is a monster, and will not just be a good player for us, but in a few years, he will take over where Jason Taylor left off. Things have to workout (as said before, age could slow down some player, and others are untested), but if all works right, this could be a very scary O-Line, especially when you put Taylor back with Porter in the 3-4, the pass-rush this team could produce this year, could be down right nightmarish

Only thing we need is Turnovers of the INT kind and by that i mean our DB's and not JT. Our Defensive front 7 will bring the house and more but our DB's have to take advantage of passes thrown unaccurately and passes thrown under pressure.

FanMarino i agree with you on the defensive line i think if our secondary can contribute then we will have a good defense . I am not sure how Matt Roth and cb Jason Allen will play but I think i sense a good season coming .

i really hope Roth and Allen will step it up and show me something.:kick:

I didn't see the article as particularly "rose colored glasses/ Blue skies forever" what I did read was a fairly decent review of our Defense.

One thing I think he missed was just how young our Defense has gotten, one the points of harping this off season was "Aging Defense Aging Defense"

Outside of Zach and Taylor and Porter, and the rotated holliday and Traylor, our starters are actually pretty young, Roth Daniels Crowder Bell Allen Goodman Wright Solai all are fairly young players with their futures ahead of them. I would like to see the "old defense" rumor put to rest, we have had a youth movement that has went unnoticed.

exactly, i love reading cohen articles, it does just that, get my hopes up. At least someone has a positive perspective on issues surrounding our fins. He admits there is lots to work on but notes there are plenty of things to be excited about. and i for one like reading about it.
