Howdy fellow Finfans. I am vacationing in sunny South Florida and chose to go to Dolphins’ training camp for my entertainment today. I know I love reading the many training camp reports others have given, so now I feel it’s my turn.
This is my first one, and I am an amateur, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but be gentle.
Camp is highly spirited and organized. Nick Saban was impressive for his energy as he instructed the DB’s today.
QB’s - A.J. Feeley was not practicing today. Frerotte and Rosenfels made the most of their opportunity. Frerotte threw in the direction of Chambers and McMicheal a lot, which shows that he’s building a good rapport with his WR’s. The most spectacular play was a Frerotte across-the-field pass to Chambers at the corner of the end zone for a would-be touchdown.
Rosenfels can throw right on the numbers. He also can throw a nice, deep ball. I heard people behind me wonder why he hasn’t gotten more of a chance.
Berlin who?
RB’s: In 11-on-11 drills, Ricky would make something from nothing. He shows a nice burst to the outside and can slice through the defense. Although Lamar Gordon and Kay-Jay Harris showed today that they run with power when the OL opens holes for them (Gordon had a particularly nice run with the first team during 11-on-11 drills), no one on our roster is close to Ricky in terms of a pure RB. Gordon and KJ don’t have that “quick-twitch†reaction and cut-back ability that Williams has. Sammy Morris might have a little of these qualities, but showed nothing on the field today. Even Minor showed that he is not the slasher Ricky is. Minor is at his best when he catches the ball, not when he runs with it; he showed good RAC ability after catching a pass during practice.
Ricky does need to bulk up as he was not able to make the yards after contact we’re used to seeing.
WR/TE: David Boston showed nothing today. Rosenfels threw to Boston, and the ball bounced right off of his numbers. Someone commented that this happened because his muscles are just too big. I’m not going to expect much from him. Chambers and McMichael looked like you would expect them too. Chambers did drop a pass from Frerotte, but at the next opportunity, he caught one in the end zone for a would-be TD. Derrius Thompson was quiet but did make a nice catch on a ball thrown by Frerotte. Josh Davis dropped a beautiful pass from Frerotte, but then later made a nice catch on the sideline from a pass thrown by Brock Berlin. I’m not sure if he caught the ball in bounds, though.
OL & DL: It’s harder to take notice of the OL and DL, but I have a few observations: I like Vernon Carey. He really held his own today against JT. During 11-on-11 drills, I felt that the D had a leg up on the O today. The starting first-string DL consisted of Taylor and Carter at DE, and Traylor and ????? at DT.
I know people like Matt Roth because he is animated, and perhaps because he is the “great white hope†revisited, but from what I saw, he was not very productive today. On the other hand number 95 (Josh Shaw?) looked like a bull out there, but I did not see him get to the QB, although he came close.
Manny Wright was a no show again. I hope he comes back.
Larry Chester looks out-of-shape and could weigh 400 lbs.
JT practiced his coverage skills with the linebackers. I’m glad he’s practicing because he looked a bit stiff in coverage.
DB‘s - During 7-on-7 drills Reggie Howard and Yeremiah Bell mixed in with the first team. Bell put a nice hit on Lamar Gordon during a contact drill. Travis Daniels looked good breaking on a ball for an INT on a pass made by Rosenfels. Madison had a nice corner blitz that would have been a sack on Frerotte. On the other had, Travares Tillman is noteworthy for his pass interference.
That’s all folks!
