IAQ has played 100% of the defensive snaps in games one through three. Last week vs Cincy, which was probably their worst performance thanks to AJ Green, Michael Thomas was mixed in and played about 40% of the snaps. (Not that he was responsible for AJ)
Thomas said at the end of 2015 that he was NOT a safety and that his natural position is nickle corner. He doesn't seem to be comfortable with the position by his own admission.
Adam Gase said that McCain has been playing so well recently that Thomas may split time with IAQ at safety more often. McC received his highest snap count of the season last week at 40%. Prior to that he played...
WK1 37.8%
WK2 16.3%
WK3 28%
Why are we paying IAQ $4.25M per year to play part time? Is he one of the characters that are messing assignments? One thing is for certain. Michael Thomas has never been a good safety. For one, he hasn't had a pick since his first ever game in 2013....and he is not a great tackler for being our "big" nickle and he always seems to be on the wrong end of big plays.
First it was Maxwell ($8.5M per year) who was benched. Now IAQ is getting phased out? Is this the way to bring consistency to the defense? Adding more players to the mix....
Tennessee is not a terrible match-up problem for Miami for the DB's. They don't really have a dangerous slot OR outside receiver. Rishard Mathews is good but he is no AJ Green, Doug Baldwin, Terrell Pryor or Julian Edelman. Tajeh Sharp is about even with Mathews production-wise. The issues will likely be for the LBer's covering Delanie Walker and the RB's out of the backfield. DeMarco Murray leads the team in receptions (19) and TD's with 2.
And stopping the running game. DM has 340 yards and 3 TD in the rushing game for a 5.2 ypc. Then they can mix in the big bull (Henry) to run over our poor tackling team.
So last week Miami focused on stopping the mediocre running game of Cleveland and let AJ run against single coverage. I guess this week they will double cover Mathews and let the TE's and RB's kill our depleted LB corp.
