Curtis Lofton cut from Saints today and was due to make a little over $7Million. He's only 28 years old. Does anyone on here think he could be a fit for us now that we have locked up Suh?

Lofton's release is a bit of a surprise since he was one of the most valuable players on a defense that struggled mightily in 2014. He ranked fourth in the NFL with 144 tackles, though the Saints ranked 31st in yards allowed and dead last in overall efficiency, according to ESPN Stats and Information.

He seems like a leader that could help out our D as well. I was high on him when he was a Falcon, but admit, I haven't seen him much in New Orleans.

Edit: I dunno if we have the money to sign someone like this, but it will open up some options for us in the draft.

he would be an okay fill for us at MLB... still would need to get Kendricks. there are just not many options at all in FA... and we have a big need for ILB

Michael Wilhoite from SF is in my head as well... he played a lot last year filling in for San Frans injuries and issues at ILB... did a solid job. he is burried in the depth chart, and I believe he is tendered or something though... we would maybe have to give up a 7th round draft pick??? i am not sure... especially now with the retirement coming for Patrick Willis.

I agree. We need to find a MLB and I believe the draft is the best way to do that...Suh makes plugging in a rookie that much easier

I would love to have as much flexibility on draft day and a FA signing like this might work.

They were so bad vs. the run. How much was that on him?

I'm not completely buying the Patrick Willis retirement talk (until I hear him announce it).. If the 49ers end up having to cut him, I would LOVE (probably jizz my pants) if the Dolphins pursued and were able to get him.

Just a thought :ponder:

I guess you would have to look hard at the tape...that defense was horrid

Lofton has been an anchor in the middle of that defense for awhile.. .captain too. Saints secondary has been horrid, and injuries up front havent helped them either. Lofton is a solid payer, but may come expensive in FA.

I'm big on Kendricks and I'm okay with him at 14. However, Lofton is still young, and if you are hypothetically sold on WR or CB in round 1, than we most likely won't have a shot at Kendricks, and there is no other 3-down LB like him in the draft that we could plug in. Lofton could make sense for us if the FO is thinks WR/CB/LB or G. I'm just saying it opens up a lot of options for us.

yeah Lofton would be an okay fit in the middle... he is 28... but he struggles in coverage. another issue would be he has played in a 3-4 basically next to Vilma most of his career (until injury).... a little different there as well.

how expensive too will he be?

Talked to my buddy whos an avid Saints fan..watches every game 3 times lol. He says great on first and second down but hes slow and killed them on 3rd down covering. In that case I dont want....... 2 down guys are dime a dozen.

Finitis23 - Before you jizz your pants, you realize that Patrick Willis has a serious injury to his big toe. OK you're not buying retirement, but it sounds pretty real to me. The 49ers are moving on without him.

we could do worse but his instincts aren't all that great and he's pretty limited range wise...2 down guy...i dont hate it but i also dont think it is the difference maker we need

Jus an opinion, but IF he were available, knowing he is an injury risk- why not try to get at a discounted price? We could do a lot worse (and have been doing worse) than Willis.

In 2013 -7.2 PFF grade & digressed to -21.5 last year... pass. Aim for Perryman/McKinney/Anthony in the second round.
