I'm certainly not an expert on why certain teams or players commit penalties. And I apologize if this has already been discussed elsewhere, but I've always believed that a player commits penalities if he lacks the physical ability to outplay his opponent. This doesn't apply to all penalties, but may for certain types:
1. Offensive Line Holding. Simply put the guy is being beat.
2. Off-sides. The individual is trying to get an extra jump to make up for his weakness. The exception maybe Jason Taylor.
3. Defensive Holding. Sam Madison often victimized for this when he gets beat. Junior running behind the TE's.
This theory doesn't account for the stupid penalities. Taunting, the "second punch", and the pre-snap penalties.
I think we are still in the midst of a rebuilding/retooling season. We've played competitive, but still need players who are more fundamentally sound and skilled. We need time for the players to gel (ie: the offensive line). We need help with the corners as Travis Daniels will continue to grow and Will Poole while injured has talent unrevealed.
The penalities will continue this year as Saban is constructing "his" team. He simply had too many holes to fill from the Wannstadt and Speilman years. And as a reminder, early on Saban stressed that it will take time to make the correct changes and expect the finished product (not exactly his words).
As disappointed as the Buffalo game was, it is a far cry more entertaining and spirited than any games in the recent past. I guess my point is that the penalities will slow down when better players join the team, the team becomes more cohesive and some of our youngsters develop.
