Another UDFA I Like: WR Derek Moye

I was listening to NFL Radio this morning and Amani Toomer was on saying the Moye runs good routes, he has good hands and good speed and was surprised to not see him get drafted. Said if he can learn to get off the jam at the LOS then Miami found themselves an excellent receiver.

And it's funny that I've seen this question brought up multiple times about him, but getting off the jam at the LOS is exactly what I see in his game that intrigues me. Of all the times that he had either Dee Milliner or Dre Kirkpatrick jamming him in the two games they played in 2010 and 2011, I only saw them do it successfully maybe twice, and he fought back with some really keen releases that got him behind them and open several times. That was the best secondary in college football. But when you're a big player, getting off the LOS is always going to be the big question, because you're a big target.

It's interesting that Toomer has taken an interest in him. Amani played ball at Michigan, so he's got no love for Penn State. But he's probably seen Moye play because he watches Big Ten games. Moye caught 9 balls for 125 yards in 2 games against Michigan 2009 and 2010. They didn't play each other in 2011.

I honestly haven't seen the guy play and it was surprising to me that Amani Toomer brought him up. Ross Tucker also chimed in because he watches a lot of Penn State football and said the reason he wasn't drafted was because the QB position has been "garbage the last couple of years" at Penn State.

Has he actually done something this OTA session.

None of the receivers have. Brian Hartline and Davone Bess have stood above the crowd, and the only other guy even getting some mention is Legedu Naanee, which doesn't surprise me (wait until the pads come on).

If you would have asked me a month ago whether Derek Moye will stand out in OTAs or in training camp I'd have said training camp, because I think where he will start to separate himself a little is handling physical coverage which you see more of in training camp than OTAs. Some of the OTA heroes disappear when the pads come on, and similarly some of the OTA nobodies start looking a lot better. He's more the latter, or at least that's been my prediction.

he has solid hands, but he has the speed of a tight end and the acceleration of a fullback....I can't see him making the team

Unless you count B.J. Cunningham standing out for all the drops he has every practice.

Didn't realize fullbacks and tight ends were commonly running in the 4.4's nowadays.

Haha.

Well there's a reason I refer to him as the Paul Pierce of receiver prospects.

(I don't like Paul Pierce)

He ran 4.52 40 at the combine, 4.44 at his pro day. His 3-cone time of 6.96 is very good when you consider his size, guys that big are usually a little stiff in the hips.

His 40 time at the combine was good enough for 18th among the 53 WR that ran. His 3-cone time, which he did not run at the combine but did at his pro day, would have been good enough for 16th in front of Chris Givens (6.97), Rueben Randle (6.99), Tommy Streeter (7.08), B.J. Cunningham (7.10), Brain Quick (7.10) and Marvin McNutt (7.15) who were all mentioned at various times on the draft board. What hurts him, and now I can see where Toomer was coming from, was his bench where he only got 10 reps.

I'm not sure who's going to make the team but Philbin has said priority one is catching the ball consistantly and there are enough intriguing players at WR to make this battle for the roster interesting. Rishard Matthews (who has been mentioned as making some downfield catches), Roberto Wallace I've heard mentioned a few times as well, B.J. Cunningham is getting mentioned for the wrong reasons as is Gates...running fast and playing fast are two very different things. This WR battle along with the RG/RT positions are the ones I'm looking forward to.
