I've been reading a lot of stuff saying that Alabi "needs to bulk up," so I decided to check his dimensions vs. other prominent LTs to see how he compares. Here are his numbers without taking into account any weight during his "redshirt" year:

HT: 6-5
WT: 315 lbs

Willie Roaf - 6'5, 320 lbs
Orlando Pace - 6'7 325 lbs
John Runyan - 6'7 330 lbs
Walter Jones - 6'5, 315 lbs

The anomaly and freak of nature - Jonathan Ogden 6'9, 345 lbs

The guy he could be replacing - Damion McIntosh - 6'4, 320 lbs
Dolphin Great Richmond Webb (6'6, 325 lbs)

Given that these weight stats may not be dead on accurate because players often skew their weight, but it appears that Alabi doesn't really have that much weight to gain to be able to play the position at a high level. In fact, Alabi and Walter Jones are listed with the same exact dimensions. Hopefully Alabi can be the man on the left side of line for years to come.

Cool, he must have already bulked up. When we drafted him, my memory is he was along the lines of 6'5, 289 or thereabouts. Where did you get those dimensions, from our roster?

Sounds good, though. Hopefully he still has quickness.

If we don't bring in a LT in the offseason, that will speak volumes about Saban and Houck thinking he really does have potential to play. McIntosh could be kept as a contingency plan as well.

I got the measurements from NFL.com. Those were also the same numbers on this site too.

He has a chance to be a solid LT, but if we have the chance to grab a potenital stud LT, I would not be too miffed if we jumped at it.

Well, have to remember that sheer size doesn't make an LT. I know plenty of people 6'5" 315.

just cause hes listed at 315 doenst mean he doesnt need to add bulk. hes thin for 315, and he needs to add some mucle mass and weight for leverage.

He must have put on 20 lbs. within the last year.

It's hard to say. Sometimes Bulk Up means get stronger, other times it just means gain some weight. I think in this case it's get stronger.

I'm still waiting for the.

"OMG HOW CAN YOU COMPARE ALABI TO THEM?!?!? :fire: "

When they talked about Alabi, they were referring to his lower body strength, not necessarily his overall weight. He looks like he can carry about 15 more pounds easily but in order to get the push for run blocking, he'll need to improve his lower body strength. I got this from one of the draft bio's on him last year...(I have no idea where it is now, sorry).

I know I'm stronger now at 160 than I ever was at 200.

That doesn't even sound possible, but it's true.

When you consider that these guys are toting 300lbs, it's pretty easy to see that weight doesn't equal strength. Consider this: Manny Wright came into camp at what, 340? He lost 30lbs of fat. He can easily put 30lbs of muscle back on. Now compare his strength in both situations.

Oh ok but I would've thought his lower body strength was his best asset. The guy squats about 800 lbs.

he really has another year for growth before I expect to see him in the games. Perhaps some NFL Europe for some seasoning too also. I think he could be solid RT/LT in the NFL but he needs more time with Houck still.

Dont rush him he is a project for a reason :)

yeah, I saw that too and it didn't make a lot of sense. But he has the wide wingspan that you want it a LT, but it definitely said his power needed to be improved for the pro level ??

These stas are funny - he squats 800 lbs - c'mon get real! If you saw him in camp he looked like a LB - Sorry but even though I was not there the camera cannot lie and even the coaches commented on it - he was VERY light. 315 if Welker stood on the scale next to him. My guess is he needed to put on closer to 30+ lbs just to hit 300. Which is okay because he seems to have the frame and talent - Houck seems to like him enough to move him to LT. Hopefully he is in the rotation next year and in 2 years can be a factor on the line.
