There has been serious concern about Mike Pouncey coming back from the hip injury that cost him half the preseason and the regular-season opener at Seattle. Indeed, it is possible Pouncey, who reportedly is nursing a small fracture to his surgically repaired hip, might miss a week or two more.

That's the bad news.
The good news is no one is panicking because replacement Anthony Steen has been, well, outstanding.
Steen, signed to the Miami practice squad last November when he was basically out of football after being cut by Arizona in September, is a first-year player who made his regular-season debut on Sunday against Seattle. And that debut, coming on the heels of a solid preseason, was very, very good.
How good did Steen play?
Well, if you trust the ProFootballFocus.com metrics, you can say Steen had a better opening day that all but six NFL centers. That's because PFF gave Steen the seventh best grade among 32 centers graded.
Steen's 79.8 grade was better than ...
New York's Nick Mangold.
Carolina's Ryan Kalil.
Dallas's Travis Frederick.
Buffalo's Eric Wood.
Baltimore's Jeremy Zuttah.
And Pittsburgh's Maurkice Pouncey. Among others.
And I just listed some excellent NFL centers.

When Pouncey comes back, could Steen move to right guard? Does he have a future at guard for us?

It's a little early to get excited, but it would be nice to be on the other end of an Evan Mathis-type success story.

Steen's future is locked in at Miami. If nothing else, Pouncey's hx makes a good backup OC a necessity.

Reminds me of the Samson Steale situation all over again. I understand that Vets shouldn't lose their jobs to injury. But, as a coach, breaking up a unit that's coming together just to insert a vet is bad.

Satele was horrific in that 2nd spell

Two things here. Steen wouldn't make a good guard imo. Arms too short but he can be a very good center for us. As far as someone not losing their job due to injury? That has never made any sense to me. If Steen is playing well and Pouncey is not then why make a switch? If every team goes by that then brady would have gone back to the bench but BB was smarter than that and I hope Gase is too.

Ozzy rules!!

I would see if anyone wants to trade a pick for Pouncey. 3rd rounder? I'll take it. Pouncey is still young.

Another guy steps in and what a surprise Pouncy is not missed.

I think Pouncey is a good center but I just think the position is highly overrated.

A knock against Pouncey is that when put at guard he did not thrive.

The guards and tackle positions are much more difficult to play and stick out like sore thumbs when they get beat.

Would never wish injury on a player but if Pouncey goes to IR I wouldn't feel bad at all. You cant convince me that he is not a large factor in the cultural problems surrounding this team, not to mention he is highly over rated on the field in my opinion.

If Steen continues to play well, then Pouncey needs to go. We could certainly use the cap space. Pouncey seems like a knucklehead anyways.

It's time to get rid of pouncy. He is not worth it. Moving Steen to guard is stupid. Why would you change someone's position when they are doing just fine where they are at? I don't get it. We been drafting guards covering them to tackles on opposite sides. It really baffles me why we do this. Also, pouncy does this head nod EVERY SINGLE TIME right before he hikes the ball. It's a dead give away I'm surprised hasnt been harper on. Pouncy is a liability at this point and if we can get some kind of compensation for him I say we do it... quickly.

Cool heads prevail.... If you cut Pouncey you have 10M of dead cap on the books. Next year may be a little less, but that's still too much to give up on just because you had a player play well in week 1. This is a great situation to be in because now it gives you more options at a position that had 0 depth coming into the season. You don't mess with success, but you don't know what you have till you have it, so when Pouncey comes back from injury you have him and Steen rotate in practice at guard and center and see which group gels the best. You upgrade your guard play either way and keep a great backup center just in case someone goes down again. It's a win win for Miami.
