Sorry if this has been posted before, but can anyone out there tell me if there is any benefit for the Chiefs to hold on to Trent until after June 1st?

Possibly cap ramifications for the Chiefs, etc. Thanks.

The only benefit would be A). If Huard or Croyle go down with a major injury, they would have a veteran backup to turn to. B). If a QB from another team were to go down and need a veteran to come in, it MIGHT increase their trade partners. HOWEVER, that is only if Trent Green is willing to renegotiate a new contract with that team and he has already stated that he will not re-work his contract for any team other than Miami. So unless a team is willing to spend that kind of money on him for one stop gap season, it's going to be hard for them to trade him to anyone else. There is NO WAY KC wants to pay him that kind of $$ to be an "Insurance Policy".

Is tomorrow the day they have to pay is bonus???

I think so but they would need to cut him today or pay him tomorrow
I dont think we will have trent green for anything less that a 4th so I say lets not get him and let the QB on the roster fight for the starting position

There is a cap benefit. It would spread the prorated bonus over the 2007 and 2008 seasons, in effect according to John Clayton, saving them about 3.25 M against the cap this season...however it would add dead money to next years' cap...it's possible that is why they haven't been inclined to move Green, but who knows with King Carl....

no benefeit...the 7.3 million they owe him is salary that he only gets if he's on the roster for the first game...

Well there is always the issue of: the longer they hold him, the more opportunities he has to hurt himself in THEIR camp and then the money is guaranteed, and they have no option to get rid of him.

yea. They can't keep Green from working out or practicing with the team. So the longer they wait, the more the risk. Peterson is pissing me off. So, i think it's safe to say he's doing the same to Cam and Mueller. I say F Peterson. We should offer a 7th and nothing more. Peterson isn't fooling anyone. Miami holds all the cards. I'd never wish injury on any player. But it would be ironic if K.C had to pay 7.2 mil because Peterson wanted to be a dick. The guys an idiot. I want to get Green in here so we can have a quality competition at the spot.

I'm pretty sure they can keep Green on the roster all the way up till the last cuts. Meaning the very last day up until every team has to be under the cap before the regular season starts. I've read and heard so many speculations about this deal though that I am at this point not really sure who to believe. Everyone seems to have a different take on the issue.

They can keep him until his contract expires next season, but as of the last cut day, his salary of $7.2 and associated cap hit of about $9.3 M would be guaranteed. It would seem that they can keep him this season, at least that is what Carl has said..that they have planned to have him and his salary for this season...

They can spread the cap hit over the 2007 and 2008 seasons by cutting him after June 1, but of course, that savings for 2007 (if they were to trade or cut him) would be dead money against the cap in 2008....

Well, there is a 'cap' benefit of about $3 M if they cut him after June 1, but his salary would be guaranteed as of the last cut day, as you said...

Do they need to cut him to make room for the rookie signings and still stay under the cap.
