I strongly believe that the keys to how well our defense is going to play next year is largely dependent on how well we rush the passer. We need to make the QB get rid of the ball quickly if not our secondary is going to get burned (No Champ Bailey on this team). We can assume that most teams are going to double team JT which should provide 3rd year starter Matt Roth with the opportunity to prove himself. In 2 years in the NFL Matt only has 4.5 sacks I understand he has been playing a backup role but he hasn't lived up to the hype. I remember when he was drafted all I could think was how nasty this guy was.We saw some of his energy at the end of last season and just wondering if anyone who went to OTA saw if he added muscles or if he looked like a player about to break out. I understand you can't judge a DE in OTA but anything would be appreciated. Is their any news about him this off-season?

Well... you have to understand that a 3-4 DE's primary responsibility isnt to rush the QB. Its to tie up blockers for the LBs... and then rush the passer as a 2nd priority. He isnt a 4-3 DE... where his main job is to rush the QB...

Plus, Roth has been used in rotation with Kevin Carter. Now he is getting the full amount of playing time... which will increase his numbers.

i wouldnt say he hasnt lived up to the hype, you can only really judge that perhaps after this season when he actually gets alot of olaying time in a starting role as oppose to just being a back up guy coming in every few downs to relieve a starter every now and then. i personally cannot wait to see what big matty roth does for us this year starting presumeably at one of the DE slots.

I don't know all the hype you are talking about. Sure he's a prospect, but only on here do you get his hype blown outta proportion. Any other news outlet you hear nothing.

I think with the time he was in last year he played well. They are bringing him along nicely and with increased time you should see more results. He's going to be a solid player for the phins D for many years would be my guess.

Matt Roth has a big time motor... I saw him at mini camp running QB Rushing Drills and he gives 150% every down and he is just a down right BEAST... I know for a fact hes gonna have a big year now that hes a starter especially now that we have Porter!

When i look at Roth i see a guy who could make things happen. From what i have seen and herd by people on this forum is he is not someone who is intimidated and that's a big factor in having success. How many times have you herd of people playing scared that do well? Probably not too many. Matt Roth can probably be a pretty intimidating dude and if he's got the mental part of the game down i think he could have a great year. I think he will have somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-8 sacks this year. People will be looking out for Joey Porter and Jason Taylor which will open things up for Roth but it will be up to him to take it.

He'll be getting more playing time this year, so we should see some improvement. Like FinNasty said, its not his priority to rush the passer. Our system is designed for our LB's to get in and terrorize the QB. Joey Porter is going to be a huge addition in this respect, some people don't even realize it.

nice work bro....i like to see you earning that dolla

Teams do this every year and it doesnt help them 1 bit. Really if they want to take him out of a game they need to triple team him
